Ey,

I am used to creating sites without advertising.

Where do I start if I want paid ads on a certain site?

I know I need traffic but then?...

Well, you could start with Google AdWords. It's "free" and you can get started instantly. Don't expect to retire right away with them however. Are you trying to incorporate ads into existing sites, or new sites?

Just for a new site that could use ads to fund the hosting costs.

I guess it depends largely on the context. If you need revenue for hosting via ads, I can assume it's not a site designed to sell a product, service, or download, so we're probably talking about an educational/tutorial, entertainment or fan site of some sort. Am I right? And if you're in need of hosting funding, you probably don't have a marketing budget for your own site... That's the great catch 22 with websites: advertisers don't want to be on a site that doesn't have established traffic, and it's hard to get established traffic without the advertising revenue needed to promote yourself.
I'd start small (AdWords, donation pleas, etc) and do what you can to get traffic. It is REALLY hard to attract advertisers to a new site (it's like trying to sell commercials on a new TV station with no way of showing your advertisers how many people will watch it). In the meantime get the buzz going for your site and promote it in as many ways possible. Link trading is very common--no money changes hands and everybody wins. Find what sites are in related field-but not as competition-and try to work out a deal.
Get the traffic and you won't have to worry about hunting down advertisers.

Cheers, the website wont be up for a while anyway, but thanks.
