I am creating a few web banners and I am having trouble getting the .gif version under the requested size.
I have tried lowering the publish settings but it causes the background to start banding (gradient background).
I have also tried deleting un-needed frames/key frame and tweens.
An example of the size is a 100k .gif needs to be 40k.
I also have Image ready if that helps.

Right click the gif in the library and say properties. Then change the Compression to Photo (JPEG). Now go to File->Publish Settings. Go to the Flash tab and change the JPEG quality slider to a lower value until the banner size is small enough.

Thanks for the help but I think you mis-understood me.
I need to convert the flash file (.fla) to a .gif under 40k.
And unforunetly I am not using any .jpeg images, only .eps.

Oh then you would need to use imageready or photoshop or gimp or something to edit the GIF. I would recomend using less colors and dithering. Or making the resolution smaller then scaling it up in the html.
