View Full Version : Got 15 minutes spare? Help us check the tutorials and get the CMS live!

We need to check the tutorials as they stand in the new CMS before switching to it... There are 200 of them and checking them all ourselves would take forever. We need your help!

Below I'll post the tutorial list, split into Blocks of 5 tutorials. They are simply listed as per the Tutorials index.

We need you to pick a group of five tutorials and for each tutorial, compare each page to it's counterpart in the CMS. You don't need to compare them word for word. We already know the words are right. What we need to know is if there are broken links, or if there's some other formatting issue, etc.

Your report should be in the following form:

<Title>, <status>, <remarks >
<Title 2>, <status>, <remarks >

Where

<Title> is the title of the tutorial you checked.
<status> is one of

Not found – Use this status when you could not find the tutorial in the CMS
Perfect – Use this status when you found the tutorial and it had no problems as compared to the original. That is, all images and SWFs showed up, the code was all nicely formatted, etc.
Requires work: images / SWFs / links – Use this status when you found the tutorial but one or more images or SWFs don't show up, or a link to a file or URL is broken.
Requires work: Formatting – Use this status when you found the tutorial but something about the formatting (e.g. table too wide) breaks the layout of the site.
Requires work: Code – Use this status when you found the tutorial but some code blocks are either not marked-up as code.

<Remarks> is an area you can use to direct us to any specific instances of the problem you're reporting. E.g. "All images on page 2 are broken". You can also include here a recommendation that the tutorial be scrapped or archived if you feel it's legacy.

Taking 15 minutes to help us get this done will ensure we can re-launch very soon, without compromising the quality of the content on the site.

I've begun it below by doing the first five tutorials. See my report below for an example of the format. It took me exactly 18 minutes to do six. My connection is realy slow for some reason.

Thanks to all those who can help. Can I recommend, if you do, you post saying "Block X is mine", then come back and edit your post with the report when you're done, just so we don't get multiple people doing the same block of tutorials at the same time.

Hint: The best way to find tutorials in the new CMS is to use the Advance Search feature. Access it by making the obvious replacemet in the following URL: h--p://67.15.207.130/dev/search/advanced (sorry, don't want Google spiderring it just yet). Set 'Query' to the tutorial name and 'Search Field' to Title only. Should find it no troubles.

NB: Please don't try to sign up at the above URL. This URL is for demo only. CMs goes live you can sign up for your author's account.

Which tutorials section are we testing?

Jesse
05-24-2006, 03:39 AM
CB, Thx mate. Re IE6; I can fix it up and plan to. Benefits of having a DB-based CMS system = "Find and replace". having ppl such as yourself manage things like looking for errors lets me focus on such things :)

Cota, we're testing the CMS versions of the tutorials (on the new domain, URL in my original post above) agains the static versions in the Tutorials section here... accessible by the link in the main menu... Not sure if that's actually any clearer.

Block 4 here.

Tutorial 17 Actions for Flash 5, Not Found.
Tutorial 18 Execute Files from Local Presentations, Requires Work, link broken for source files
Tutorial 19 Open Documents from Local Presentations, Requires Work, link broken for source files.
Tutorial 20 Navigation Circle That Stops On Mouse Over, Perfect, (although coding formating is indendented way too much IHMO). Also regarding the author's heading, the gray box and picture formating is off.
Tutorial 21 Initializing Movie, Requires Work, The swf files appears to be broken. Doesn't load properly. Also regarding the author's heading, the gray box and picture formating is off.

EDIT: Jesse what am I doing wrong? I can't seem to find any of the tutorials like the way you suggested.
----------
Edit (Jesse): All issues fixed except for the SWF in tutorial 21. That's because the SWFs all need a "base href" now we're using the CMS. I'll bulk set that when I bulk change the SWF embed tags to work with IE 6.

Tutorial 28 attachMovie, Not Found

Maths Functions including Random, Requires work, AS code not in [as] tags.

Motion using Actionscript, Requires work, AS code not in [as] tags.

Video to Vector Animation, Perfect, No source to download though...

Continuously Scrolling Graphic Objects, Requires work, Some images not showing (Hunger site image) and link to that site not working.

Actionscripted Movement, Requires work, Links in the "Assumed knowledge" not found. Some images not showing (Hunger site image) and link to that site not working.

Looking good guys! I like it. One thing that I picked up throughout is that when the author has not yet submitted his picture, the table is slightly broken. The image overlaps the div at the bottom of the table (Firefox).

Block 14 is mine... :)

Tutorial 09 Swap Depths, Requires work, I don't know what it is, but the status bar is saying 1 item remaining on page 1/2 for a very long long time...
Tutorial 10 Preloading Multiple Loaded Movies, Requires work, The two links in the Assumed knowledge on page 1 gives me 404...Percentage Preloader link in page 2(http://67.15.207.130/dev/content_images/2/index.shtml) gives me 404 as well...
Tutorial 11 Object Movement Relative To Mouse Position, Requires work, You are missing 'Position' in the title of the new site... Is it intentional??? The first two links in Assumed Knowledge gives me 404... and the latter two and other setProperty, getProperty links in the page point to the current site... Draggable movie(http://67.15.207.130/dev/content_images/20/index.shtml) gives me another 404... Page 1 has AS tag and CODE tag combined in the code for the Frame 1...
Tutorial 12 Creating preloaders for the attachSound Method, Perfect
Tutorial 13 Arrays, Requires work, Line for the Requirements and the actual content are in one paragraph and needs to be separated...

PS> I don't know if this is something that can be done easily or not, but I don't like the search functionality in the CMS... If I type in 'Preloading Multiple Loaded Movies' and select Intermediate from the drop down menu, it's got to be the first one because that's the exact string that the search should look for and then do the partial search, but it comes in page 5... :(

PS> If you are using Geshi, how about adding a line number for the codes??? I think that'd be nice... ;)

PS> It'd be great if the links are abit more prominent... It's not that easy to see if a certain word is a link or not... Not really a problem for me cuz I was navigating the links with Tab key but it might be to the reader...

Tutorial 67 MovieClipLoader in Flash MX 2004 - Requires work: images / SWFs / links - Broken links
Remark: This tute's got a new name: "Using the MovieClipLoader (first of two tutorials)".. hence why I couldn't find it at first.

Tutorial 69 Dynamic Sound Fade - Perfect

Tutorial 70 Loading Images via XML into Flash MX 2004 - Requires work: images / SWFs / links - Broken links

The category-selection doesn't quite work, for example, when I searched for tutorial 66, I typed "banning" in the searchbox and selected 'tutorials' as my category, I found nothing. When I selected 'all categories' I did find the tute.. Just so you know
Also, the bottom part of all the author's images are outside of the table (only in FF, not in IE)

*puff, puff*

I'm slowly but surely making my way through all these. See my inline comments in each post as I make my way through.

To all those who helped (espcially Cota, damn!) thanks heaps. We couldn't have gotten it done without you, and getting the CMS up and running has already been a huge (and much delayed) task. We really apprciate your help.

Also, jesse, I emailed you about this, but I cant login into my account on the CMS system..

Ruben
06-07-2006, 02:00 PM
Is the CMS-account connected to the forum-membership? As in, is there already a Ruben-account for me in the new CMS, or do I have to create it first?

CyanBlue
06-07-2006, 02:03 PM
I don't think that account is tied to the forum account... It has to be separate cuz we don't want 'anybody' to mess with the system... So, I guess it goes to Jesse and Strok's hand as it is with everything else... ;)

Ruben
06-07-2006, 02:06 PM

The accounts aren't connected... but that doesn't mean they won't be. I've been thinking about a custom hack to do that, but later.

As for signing up for accounts, pls don't do it on the new server just yet :) It doesn't send emails as far as I know anyway, so it prolly won't work :)

It'll be ready soon and you guys will all get first dibs.

(5 months later) So how is it comming?

Jesse
10-14-2006, 09:23 AM
Funny you mention that. Guess what I'm working on right now...

It's funny you know. It's actually been just over 12 months since we settled on a product to use and started setting it up. I know because our license ran out the other day and we had to buy it again without it ever having gone live. The litany of reasons (valid and invalid) is a long one, but suffice to say it was my plan to launch the new design & CMS today... only I can't find Strok anywhere...

Cota
10-14-2006, 07:42 PM
uh oh, we have a lost Strok.....:p No worries Jesse, we all understand that you and Strok and very busy with life, etc.

Ye of little faith. www.actionscript.net has been live since the weekend. We're toying with appache redirects and need to get them right so ppl's bookmarks and search engine references remain valid. Should be done in 24 hours. Then all domains kick over.

Cota
10-18-2006, 01:13 PM

I was checking the Tutorials section when I came across this one:
http://67.15.207.5/resources/articles/209/1/Flash-MX-Object-Oriented-Menu-using-PHP/Page1.html

It popped up a Flash dialog box I'd never seen before. Image attached.

I'm guessing someone provided a SWD instead of a SWF.

Huh... AS.net??? Do we really need another domain or is it just a test site???

Like the new look... except the red is abit too bright to my eyes... Other than that, just a little bit of color/design tweak so that each sections will blend into the new layout would be nice... ;)

Jesse
10-19-2006, 05:57 AM
@ CB: AS.net has always belonged to us, but we didn't want to cut-over on the most popular domains. We needed to test first.

@ Pix: That's the dialog you get if you have FP9 installed and debugging enabled in a SWF I believe. Means the SWF needs to be fixed. I'll get onto it.

@ Cota & tg: Forums (and the cms itself) both have a domain-checking licensing system. Until we cut-over all domains, they wont work just right; e.g. links in CMS link to IP based site instead of URL.

Sorry for the delay; didn't get notification of replies for some reason.

tg
10-19-2006, 03:51 PM
heh. i didnt check the links, and it appeared i was logged in. i meant the links were messed up visually. just a jumble of underlined links, no images / css attached for them.

anyway. this will be great. keep up the great work jesse.
