I am interested in creating my own extensions.

my programming skills are marginal...I know some as and html, not too familiar with javascript...

can anybody suggest a good place to start?

The book Extending Flash MX2004 is the best place to start imo. With that book and some of the free JavaScript resources on the web you'll be making Flash extensions in no time.
