sorry to be a pest right off the get-go, but could you clarify 'accommodates events via XML'?
MichaelxxOA
07-10-2006, 05:44 PM
We should be able to add an event to an XML file (you specify the XML schema) and that event should be viewable in some form through the calendar.
Michael
to who will this code belong ?

Yeah very good point, it should be noted that most competitions we hold are for the benefit of the forum, and the community as a whole...
With that said, what would be everyones desired choice?

Also......what range does this calendar pertain to? July? All of 2006? infinite?

I think it would be best to spend at least twice the contest's duration encrypting and obfuscating the files to our best ability. That way there's, and, um, I- we. I can never remember why you're supposed to encrypt your .swfs...

senocular
07-13-2006, 04:38 AM
I think the idea is just to have good, clear, readable, understandable code. That is key for that part of the judging. But keep in mind, too, that coding alone isn't going to win this. You first gotta have a nice entry ;) And believe you me, the competition is FIERCE (http://www.senocular.com/pub/asorg/ASorg_calendar_contest.swf)!
Still hands down the winner Seno...!

actually- i kinda have an issue with our 'winning' calendar. i used it to mark an important appointment today and was NOT reminded. i mean, maybe i had my speakers turned down or something, but let's not rule out the possibility of a bug... i'm sure my brother'll get married again, so no big loss, but worth a second perusing all the same.

Wait I know we can't use frame animation but can we draw movies and attach them at run time or do we have to create all the elements in code?
Basically, you can do whatever you feel you must do. The limitations were listed in the rules on the first page. Not only is it about how well its coded, but creativity as well.

i am just on it to implement some sort of Feast system
like sylvester, christmas ....
but i am unsure abouth the rules needed !
eg.
(coud by totaly wrong no idea)
easter --> first monday in 4. month
something else --> last sunday before 20th of 5 month
exact data --> no problem :p
what rules are there for this ???
ah jeh
is a week wich is started in the previus month still the first week of this month ? like 1.1 let's say this is friday
is a week wich isn't full in this month still the last week of this month ?
31.12 let's say this is monday
Normally I understand what you're saying...but this time I dont have a clue.
Hmmm
easter (where the bunny hidde the eggs) isn't on a fix data (as long i know)
like
each year on 20.4 is easter
but something like each first monday in MAY is easter
what other types exist of NON FIX DATE Feasts
like the friday after the 15th of july is a big fieasta (for what ever reason)
or
if 15.03 IS a saturday then we celebrate Whatever
or
the first monday whit an oddnumber date after the second friday in december is a fieaste but just if it's already in the next month
..
.
I know what you mean now...this will help
http://www.smart.net/~mmontes/ushols.html
WOW
this side looks great !
thanks a lot !
puh what a stress they make (you nearly need to have a DR Math to know when eastern is :p )
I have some pages with other algorithms that may be of interest to anyone wishing to prepare an electronic calendar. Algorithms to calculate the date of Easter in the Western tradition include Butcher's Algorithm, Oudin's Algorithm, and Carter's Algorithm. Calculations of the date of Easter in the Orthodox tradition use Gauss' Algorithm.
this means i need to have FIXED Feast whit out the posibility to extend it !
i not going to make a parser for mathematic callculations for it ! :p

Ok, so i may have jumped the gun a bit early on that submission. I noticed the post a few up with the list of holidays and noticed i was missing a LOT of dates so I decided to add them in to my event list. Also i decided not to be lazy for once in my life and actually implement a solution for dates of the nature of "2nd monday of the month". You can still find my (updated) submission at the same links i provided initially.

07-27-2006, 06:31 PM
The scope of the project defines that the calendar must be able to display events recorded in an xml file. It's not required to implement anything for crazy holidays.

who else is curious as to see everyone elses submissions? :)
For me its more of an interest in the artistic aproach people took towards what their calendar looked like - its styles, shading, user interface and what not - moreso then how well it works, or if their xml schema is well structured (but i realize the competition's original intent was to produce well structured code and practice good programming principles :p).
If you guys ever get the chance to see mine you'll realize my severe lack for artistic ability (im a programmer at heart lol)

I think with flash, focus on design should be a contributor to the process, as code can add or remove from the limitations of the design capabilities. Developers should not be so elitest as to determine what a designer can and can't implement.
I kind of looked into this princible with my submission.

Flash Gordon

Oh sorry to hear that :o No worries, CyanBlue. Take some time off.
As for moving, yeah, I just moved over the last 3 days. I traveled 1600 miles (on the dot) by car across Maryland, West Virginia, Kentucky, Indinia, Illinios, Missouri, Kansas, and to Colorado. It was a long drive, but it was really fun. My brother went drove out with me, then he flew home. I don't even have internet yet. I'm just borrowing some Wi-Fi right now, until I can get unpacked.

Hey guys,
While working with aerickson's calendar I noticed that when I change the Publish settings from Flash 7 to Flash 8 the name of the month dissappears.
Any explanations for this?
Best Regards,

I actually don't care too much about the results. I really just want to see how Xeef codes!
I really like the Flash Gordon calendar. It's very nice. The only thing I am trying to figure out is how to put a link in the content (event) area. For example, when clicked on a specific date, in the content area would be something like "To see the schedule click here (small PDF icon linked to a PDF file)". I am not very familiar with scripting. I was trying to implement it in the associated XML file script (I think it was January2006.xml) on the event="....." line, but that doesn't work. Can you please help me out? Maybe I am doing something wrong. I would appreciate it.
Thank you!
Mike

If it is a TextField object, you either have to import HTML and render the TextField text as HTML, or else you have to read up on the TextFormat class (you would have to define a TextFormat object as a URL, and then apply it to a range of text).
