FLV confusion

I've been searching many threads here and also help files on Adobe.com, and it seems many people are experiencing this and similar problems with flvs.

Could someone who knows what they're talking about explain why sometimes the video will play locally, but not from the server? I've heard musings about some servers not supporting the flv mime type, and other things about perhaps registering the type with IIS, but nothing very conclusive.

If someone could clear this up once and for all I'm sure I'm not the only one who would be extremely grateful!

You seem to expect one definitive answer where any number of issues could cause a problem. Configuring the mimetype on the server is one thing you would need to do if you are using IIS.

Thanks, I was sort of looking for a definitive answer, but maybe my question was a bit vague. This helps me a lot, because I am running a windows server in this case and it seems this is the problem. I just thought it would be good to post this question because when I did some searching it seemed loads of people were having the same trouble but no-one had managed to explain why. I was hoping to begin a thread that will help explain the various issues that might cause these problems, only because it seems a common one.
