View Full Version : How to clean up unused tweens from library?

I have a lot of tween objects in my library. I've been hacking on this thing for a while and have deleted many of them from the timeline, but they seem to remain in the library.
Is there a way to determine which tweens are unused and remove them from the library?
I see the library has a Use Count field, but the field contains "-" for every entry.

no, there is no way to do that but manualy. But u can go around that by copying the frames u want (by selecting them, right click, copy frames) and paste the into a new document. This will also move the items into the library of the new one.

Thanks for the copy trick!
I'm still wondering, though: Does the Use Count field in the Library panel ever show any useful information?

HI notsofast :)
um. I'm sure it doesn't matter if you have stuff in the library or not, as long as it isn't an attached file it won't get exported with the rest of the swf anyway. I don't tend to worry about it unless I have to email a weighty fla somewhere, or if I need to clean up an fla to give to someone else in a pretence of organisation!
That "use count" does work though and in my experience it is useful, I'm wondering if you remembered to select "update use count", to have "keep use counts updated" selected or to hit "select unused items"? - all options which are in the top right drop down menu of the library panel
:)

I probably looked at that menu when I first started with Flash, decided there was nothing I understood in there, then forgot about it.
That helps a lot! Now I can give my the-universe-follows-common-sense-rules meter another little nudge in the positive direction.

Ummmm... unless I misunderstood the question there's a much easier and faster way to do what you were asking about.
Open your library, open the Options menu then choose "Select Unused Items". This should hi-light all items in your Library which are currently not in use on the stage. Press the trash can icon, problem solved.
Be careful not to delete any clips which you're "attaching" to the stage with ActionScript. Since linked items may not actually be dragged on the stage they will show up as "unused".
You may also need to save your file and run through the "select unused" process a couple times to remove nested clips.
If you're like me and save multiple versions of your Flash files this will save a good deal of hard drive space.
Hope it helps,

Pix,
Thanks for the good advice about not accidentally deleting items that get attached dynamically, and also for your iterative cleaning method.
