With the impending arrival of the new server, the ressurection of the engine by 20, the coming return of Red from his vacation (we expect him to be tan, rested and full of sardines and fish guts), the seeming agreement on the name "level_10", a spiffy new facelift by pinK and myself, and the super duper board that zoom put together (although i'm not sure if he was able to get his Mac back together to work on the send stuff). We're really not that far off.

Of course since Red isn't here right now we'll just blame him for holding things up.

When you get back my dear crimson flightless aquatic fowl please see miss pinK or myself about the new lay out.

I assume that what will have to happen is that when the server is together we just need a little corner of it for the engine to go on. 20 will that be a complicated process migrating the engine? Does it have to be rebuilt from scratch or do you just plop it in a directory?

Just a small note, the new server is pending but not definite. We're having real trouble son a number of fronts. Every time it seems to be ready, it's not. I'll keep you updated as best I can. Keep up the good work team.

Hi there....my mac is still under repair...grrrrr, and here at work, i can't connect to the 20 Ton chat server with anything
hope things go better for everybody...see you soon.

It's Clobberin TIME!

Well actually I was chit chatin with the Lord of the Squirrels and I think that actually you can't do the board transfer via PHP, it has to go through the engine... the engine seems to be pretty robust in that regards. Might perform better that way anyway.

The new server should be ready any day. It seems nice and fast.

The new server is fully dedicated and on a nice Cobalt Raq. It should handle hundreds without and issue.

Yeah, kudos to Strok/Jesse for their hard work! I think we hit 60 this past weekend.

We need to have a good old fashioned meetin'. I know that this weekend is bad for 20, but there's no reason why the rest of us can't get together. Normal times in effect?

I'm anxious to get rolling again but a lot of this hinges on 20 and his spare time. He's quite a busy man, and he and he alone is coding the engine. The last I recall, I had done a simple "side" test file to see how we'd handle the whiteboard data. I need to have a conversation with the furry one to know how that will be handled and take it from there.

How does it look? Send me a file, either the tattoed Southern redneck or the redneck in training over there in Manchester...this means YOU!!

Zoom...email me!

I think we hit 60 this past weekend.
Red thinks does he? hmmm pinK wonders.

OK, Pengs, you have the latest file from Vile and I, Vile craftily passed the buck to me but then we kinda agreed that before the design progressed further it would be beneficial to whip the errant Penguin into getting his arse in gear and adding the latest functionality concept.

Then, once tested, if all are in agreement we can get feedback on whether the two different data windows idea is a goer and any comments re the default appearance while the design is still rather malleable.

I think this would also be a good stage to discuss the practical design requirements of potential skinning too.

sound reasonable?

meeting set for Sunday and confirmed
looks like we could be back on track again - yay!

Jesse - fantastic news regarding the server, I know it's been hard work but believe me, it's appreciated.
*pinK bounces up and down in gratitude*

ok. enough from me for now, I'd better go before I get all excitable and start crying :)

oh one more thing...

Zoom, you've been so quiet lately, are you still having problems getting back into Wayland? Did you find out if your boss had set up a firewall? What's going on? How's your Mac? all better now?

Pink reiterates Pengs: mail the beleaguered waterfowl!

Hi Pink, Peng...can«t get into Wayland yet :(, my boss says no firewalls at all...and still without my mac...i tooked one mac from work to home for a freelance project, but all my important files are in the damaged mac ....%$&()?$...

Pink, can you make for me a user in Wayland, to try connecting with the As client?, and also i like to see the new layout, have some ideas on the "skining" stuff...pm me please

see you...

Peng, whats'up?, as you see i can't help a lot rigth now, but anyway, i like to be updated on what's going on with the chat...

vilehelm

Zoom, i think that I might have an email with the .fla that you made originally...??? (yes, I DO!, red sent it to me!) would you like me to forward that to you?

The white board HAS to run through the engine in order to integrate all of that stuff so in essence we'll have 3 data windows...??? the mind boggles...

20 is busy but I think there's a lot that we can do in the meantime and the client should work right now so let's at least get the Vile-Pink design up and running and we'll make as little work for him as possible.

okies?

I'll be on sunday morning 8:00 my time (hopefully recovering from celebrating my team's fabulous victory on saturday morning! wOOT!). Hopefully the engine will stay up and running while 20 is away...if not we can always use YahooIM they have a conference function on the newest version... my handle is of course, vilehelm.

I have gotten the new graphics from Vile and Pink. This week, I will do my best to get the code integrated into the new look. 20TS and I need to meet to discuss CMNDs and the like (what's new, what's changed, how..etc...). I think we have decided on a new login sequence that will allow the user to "create" right from the client. This needs to be integrated as well. As for the whiteboard, I have a separate file that we can use for testing to see how the engine handles the data flow. Again, need to meet with 20 to know what those CMNDs are.

I just need to buckle up and recode everything. Hopefully done by Friday...

Pengs does his best funky chicken dance.

hi im just interested in seeing your server in practice, me and a few freinds have created a similer type of thing, but we are now developing it to connect to an irc server.......(well mainly done by one bloke he has a strange connection with coding)

if you want to take a sneak peak
see it here http://www.flashnexus.com/linexus.html we are currently also making 3d version

vilehelm

thanks limp,

uhm look at the see the chat engine thread, that should lead you to the engine...you can find someone on there most days between 9-5 us eastern time (shirking during work hours ;)

as an update Red is dilligently plugging away at the v.2 we're trying to do it in MX and are encountering a little bit of a learning curve. We used smart clips (well...red did) in the first one and there sems to be a signifigcant difference between them and the UI components (which i don't like at all, they remind of the same stuff in Director, big and bulky).

I suspect something will be viewable next week and then hopefully if all goes well with the new server we can move along implementing this sucker in the next month or so (hey, give us a break we all got day jobs!).

see you soon, i hope...

Well, this week, I have successfully integrated the new look to the current client. There is a new login sequence which allows you to create right from the client. Some of the CMNDs still need tweaking from the engine. 20 has created new tabs due to the fact that the one's we had originally didn't work in the new player...Kudos to him! He da man!

So, it's getting there. I have queried Zoomfreddy to see if he can update the whiteboard...waiting! Waiting! I suppose this week shall see something happen with this sucker. I hope. Some tweaks from the design team and from engine side, and we'll be good to go!

Fantastic work there Zoom!
Have you worked out the data flow?

Jesse
05-30-2002, 05:51 AM
I agree that it looks very cool but I'm still not sure how we're gonig to pass the data for such a (seemingly) intricate layout on. That's why I conceptualized the whiteboard originally as being made up of lines with start and end points (less data to pass).
I'm not an authority of this because I've been out of this project for a while, but I'm interested in knowing how the whiteboard data is going to be passed since I've got to manage the server bandwidth ;)

red penguin
05-30-2002, 10:28 AM
I can send you the original .fla, Jesse, and you can see how I conceptualized the data flow TO the engine...if'n ye like. It had been done with F5 line drawing style, so basically it was taking the points, plopping them into an array and sending it as an xml fragment. This would be read by the engine, passed back to the client, and then read in and told to plot and draw accordingly.

Nothing had been tested, though, as I had built that days before the fatal engine crash. I was, in fact, waiting to test it THAT VERY DAY!

BALLS! So, now with MX, I'm sure it will need to be redone.

Zoom? Any thoughts?

zoomfreddy
05-30-2002, 08:06 PM
Hi all!!!, i see a new artist around...Pink ...your draw is better than anything i can/will draw:)

i been doing some shotout game at work, so haven't make any advances on this...im thinking about making some clones of me rigth now!!!

i guess we can use the same AS you put for the data transfer, Red, if we transfer the data on each "onMouseUp", it will be small chunks of data, don't think this will be a trouble for the server, but im still thinking on the AS to do the drawing just in the right recipient client, not in all...i have the idea, but need more details...and time, see you.

vilehelm
06-07-2002, 09:51 PM
Zoom, did you use the built-in drawing thingy that flash MX has for the white board?

zoomfreddy
06-07-2002, 10:09 PM
Hi Vile, yes, and everything else but the square and buttons is now in MX AS.

(BTW. i don't like the way mx use _x/_y coordenates to draw stuff over a new emptyMC, with the wb is easy, but with complex shapes is a lot of code/_x,_y troubles) :)

...im with a big overload of work right now, if any of you wants the fla to keep working on it, just let me know.

i just wrote a silly little chat movie -- still, the best i have ever used (i hate chat) -- and would be interested in comparing implementations.

the backend is java, its uses the new KEEPALIVE socket connection mechanism, and.. that's all i can think of.

vilehelm
06-14-2002, 02:24 AM
yep it's alive infact i think it might be pretty near done...i know that space is cleared for it. i think it's just a matter of getting the engine installed and running.

everybody who's working on it has day jobs and so we've been picking at it and hacking it together for awhile now. maybe not the most efficient way to get a project done, but seeing as how we're spread out among several continents and more importantly time zones it's been pretty good. it's certainly been fun.

wario
06-14-2002, 02:35 AM

20 Ton Squirrel

The chat will be integrated into this website, I'm not sure how Jesse or Strok will want it to look... it will be exclusive to members of the forum like yerself and will have the same general look and color scheme.

I'll be setting up the engine today if time allows, this Sunday if not. Saturday is booked for me, gotta help my brother-in-law move. Feh, I don't have a pickup truck, how did I get suckered into that?!

Wario, I'm coding on the backend of this - the engine, so to speak. So in that respect I can only speak for my contribution to the project:

Once I'm done with it, thazzit. As far as I'm concerned it's structure and concept are open to observe and perhaps dissect... but I don't have the time, energy, or desire to make this distributable.

Honestly that's up to the owners of this site, Jesse and Strok. If they want to make it completely opensourced that's their call. No fur off my tail either way.

If you have specific questions about how it's built I'd be happy to answer what I can here in this section of the forum.

Just FYI, people...

With the help of Strok and his comrade Rene, I was able to get the engine running on THIS SERVER. So now we have a running copy here. This means that we need to get moving again!

I'm set to get the whiteboard integrated. ZoomFreddy? Can you send me a copy of your FLA so I can tinker it up? Pink or Red, whichever one of you has got the most recent main chat FLA, can you send me a copy as well?

Sound off, folks, lets get rolling.

Nice work, there 20, Rene and Strok! Bravo!

I'll get in touch with Pink and figure out who's got what. I believe it's in my hands, in which case I'll be sending off something to you this evening....

Issues still at large are:

Whiteboard/mx integration
Extra linefeeds ?
Shortcuts for the tab buttons

Anything else?

Yeah, file received on my end. I've added a record and playback function. Three arrays are created and the drawing is saved. My thought is to send the three at once but I'm not sure if we can do that. Also, this method will get ALL the necessary points and then send. Before I retired last night, I was thinking that it could also be done with each stroke.

Any thoughts on which we would prefer?

Also need to get the colors right on the playback as well as have a "select user" button to select who you will send the drawing to. Haven't started in on that yet.

I have a really early vesion of the prototype swf with the orange interface and not much else - I would love to see where you guys have got to at some point! I haven't been able to connect to Wayland for ages now, but perhaps I've messed up my password - you guys seem to be heading off to bed by the time I get in to work in the morning, I guess I'll have to get up earlier!

I've just been checking out zoomfreddy's whiteboard further up - it rocks! I have been playing with the API stuff and am starting to get my head around the "draw shape, fill shape, make shape do stuff" issue but cant quite get the drawing thing happening like Zooms example! Have any of you seen any examples out there of something similar I can download and look at the source to see how this kind of thing is achieved? Cheers,

I think the IP address is the same? 208.31.38.3 port 1138

then type it out like so:

it'll tell you if you do it wrong
