Hear, hear!
I'm sure it's a great achievement to have successfully made this, but it looks exactly like a normal BBS. Surely the whole point of making one in Flash would be to make it look a little more impressive?

i agree that it definitely took a lot of effort to mimic an HTML BBS -- yes, commendable, good work -- but it definitely doesn't utilize the functionality that makes flash great. two things stick out: not at all or not very asynchronous; and no transition besides a loading screen.
great work on tying together the database and flash, but it definitely needs a lot more work on usability, interactivity, and user experience.

Actually it wasnt :) When i started swfBB I wanted to give people who ran all flash sites the ability to use a board on their sites without having to use a html one so they could keep it all in flash. Its template driven so you can make it how you want if you would want too.

Oh and its made in Flash 8 too not Flash MX as the topic states. To say it has all vbulletins features is also incorrect. It has the features which a good bulletin board would expect to have. It hasnt been based on any other board and has had features added a I see fit. There are of course somethings that flash cannot create yet where as you could with html, one major one i can think of would be smiles and such as to be honest, the image support in text fields is no where near good enough yet to be able to do this.

A basic version will be available for free which is likely to have the php source files encoded will be free. A more substantive version with access to flash fla template files etc I will probably sell for a small fee if the interest is there.
There is also a fully function admin control panel that accompanies the board and an installer script too, also made in Flash.

When its finished and im satisfied its stable, its only the first alpha at the moment. You wont be able to change things on the basic version, it will be as you see it on my site.

it's easy to see the amount of effort you put into this, Immulsifier. i recall another thread where you stated that you worked on it for a year. i must commend you on a job well done!
about the smileys, you can place images into a dynamic text field if it is set to render as html. i haven't tried it for in-line smileys, but it works fine for wrapping a paragraph around an image. earlier this year, i had to populate dynamic text fields with html w/ img via xml for boeing. HERE (http://newairplane.com/787/en-US/newsroom/press/ExclusiveWDTPageUpdateandBoeingStoreSpecial) is an example. (click launch and it will take you directly to the section i'm talking about) most of the articles in the newsroom have images like that one
if you need any help figuring out the smileys, i'd be happy to help :)

Nice site! I did try doing it but had alignment issues. From what I can gather the images can only be iligned left or right in a text field which is obviously no good for smiles as they would be in the middle of a block of text. If you know of something im missing maybe you could add me to msn or something so we can have a chat about it. My MSN is in my profile on here and on the board at http://www.swfbb.com

Ah, having one that can be loaded externally into another swf sounds like a good idea. Does this mean you'd have an alternate AS 3.0 version for compatibility with newer sites though?

Would have to see about that at the time of the next flash release.
