Loading Flash 8 clips into Flex

I'm building a large flex application that will be loading in it's graphics from flash 8 swfs. I've looked into ExternalInterface for communicating, and I can communicate from the loaded SWF back to the Flex... However, I can't send messages from Flex to Flash.

How do you control the swf you've loaded into SWFLoader?

If its a Flash 8 SWF you need to communicate via LocalConnection
