Help with music

I know this might sound like a stupid problem, but here it goes:

I want to have a music piece for an intro, but i don't want to use the whole thing. How do i "slice up" the music file into the piece i want to use? Also, how do i reduce the file size?

Use an audio editting program like Sound Forge (most recent version is 5.0) or CoolEdit.

Both are good.
