Don't worry, you haven't lost anything. Flash keeps a history of all the items in your FLA, so when you delete stuff it never really gets deleted, it's hidden and preserved somewhere in case you wish to undo it. Of course if you make lots of changes to a flash file - import and delete lots of bitmaps, sounds, etc. - these never get deleted properly and build up over time. Save & Compact simply gets rid of all these items. I've seen FLA's drop to 20% of their size after all the deleted stuff is purged. I always do it whenever I have to email a FLA somewhere.

Its the save Flash *should* do every time you save but doesn't because of performance. The real save is a hacked save that's quicker.
