passing variables between Flash files?

I'm working on a project that needs to pass variables between two Flash SWF files. The files have to work both locally (CD) and from a web server.

When passing variables both locally and over the web, should I try to use localConnection or perhaps SharedObjects?

I've never used either method so any help appreciated!

I built some code using localConnection that sends variables one way (file A to file B). The only problem is having file A wait for a reply back from file B. This could be seconds or hours. How is this done?
