I probably have overlooked something, but here it goes. Looking at tutorials like the excellent advanced pathing from Jesse Stratford, I realize that I need a good reference. Tutorials like that put macromedia’s documentation to shame. So, actionscript.org aside, where can I find good reference of all of Flash’s capabilities? Any good book that covers all the difficult and not well documented aspects of Flash?
Thank you in advance.

is the house of undocumentd features. But I don't think that u r gonna find a book that gathers all of that, or even one site.
It's just u should read, search, try

Most of the stuff I document is already coverred in MM's own data sheets but is a little tricky for those less experienced with Flash to understand. If it's depth and description you'r after I highly recommend basically any title by Friends of Ed. Perhaps Foundation Flash MX ActionScript which is due out any day soon. New Riders also make good Flash books in general. Thanks for the compliments on the tute.

Being accustomed to other languages (java in particular) I feel that flash lacks the descriptive power of a true API. The macromedia flash dictionary is in that direction but still leaves many to be desired. Reading and studying movies and tutorials from actionscript.org and flashkit.com is the best practice so far, but flash capabilities - and quirks - should be well documented in one place. It would make flash development easier and a lot faster.

Prototypes and inheritance by Michael Barry and Advanced Pathing by you Steve have broaden my understanding of how flash works more than any macromedia’s tute. Most people base their development on MM’ Using Flash, Actionscript Reference and Actionscript Dictionary. For example prototype is nowhere mentioned in the dictionary.
Anyway thank you Steve for your tutorial and your valuable book recommendations. Exceptional work!
I guess I will have to dig into macromedia’s data sheets more and invest in (another) Friends of Ed book.

Thank you both,

One quick and very useful reference that I have found is:
Quick Actionscript PDF file from
http://www.media-division.com/vault/flash5qa.zip
Not in any way an in depth reference but useful nonetheless.

Oups sorry about that !!! I wonder who Steve is as well :-)
I've just proven that staying up all night programming can make you look pretty stupid sometimes.

I am really sorry about that Jesse.
