There are namy possibilities here, but generaly if you wana do real time game (many different players and realtime world) you have to think about Flash Media Server 2.
If not it basicly dosen't metter (if server performance isn't important) witch technology you will choose. /Net 2.0/ 3.0 or php...

The key to create rpg in flash is to create good server-side engine.

As for your error, nobody can really help you unless you tell us what it is... We are not capable of reading your screen... ;)

Just taking a guess, but if your running Smartfox Server, then make sure you have Java Runtime Enviroment 1.4.2 or higher. Otherwise the server will not be able to start... Also, if you are on a 64 bit OS, then smartfox server will also fail to load.

As for your main question. Yes, it is deffinatly possable, just it will take a lot of time. I would recommend sticking with Smartfox server if you can get it to work. www.gotoandplay.it has some great tutorials for it. Start with something simple, such as sending content for a dynamic text box to multiple users before diving into your game.
