Hey Everyone,

Just been reading a book about the growth of google, and how it almost didn't happen! not a bad read, some good pictures in the middle with one of their first servers - which has since been moved to the computer technology/history museum!

As many of you may know, the system uses a central code known as "pagerank" - one that determines how important your site is, through a number of factors. Mainly, the more links you have to your site, the better it shows up for search, since this means it is more important. the more popular the website that has linked you, the better it is again for you.

My question is this:

How can I make links from previous web work that I've done, the best way? Flash seems to be more difficult to search and bring back accurate results.

Has anyone experimented with certain types of meta tags etc to rank higher - or is this now irrelevant?

What are the thoughts on this?

There are all kinds of tricks for SEO...in fact, there a people whose entire career is nothing but learning the best ways to get sites listed...
I'm a bit out of the loop as I don't do much web work anymore, but in the old days it was all about meta tags.

I believe now that sheer number of links plays a much larger role (as you mentioned), so the best way to get your site listed is linkl exchanges, forum signatures, etc...
Get your address in as many clickable links as possible.

Apply to all kinds of web forums and put a link to your website in your signature. Then every post you make should slightly increase you page rank.

Another old trick used to be to create multiple duplicates of all your pages, and place links back to your homepage on each page a few times...

Take a place like this for instance... google "actionscript" and see where this site comes up (first)...
While I wouldn't be surprised if there was more to that then this forum creating a link back to the page every time a post is made, I bet it has a big part of it...

Thanks for your help guys, you've given me some great new ideas about how to tackle search engines.

While i was searching for the top 100 sites listed by google, that i didn't end up finding lol, i found another site that explained some more about how the engines read the sections of the page: http://www.vaughns-1-pagers.com/internet/google-ranking-factors.htm

perhaps it is best, as i can see from these explanations, to make a secondary page or site, which encapsulates all the data from the flash file, in to a html file that can be read by google - that they even suggest in the google webmasters page.

interesting that google scrapped meta words... i guess they didn't need them...

i need to have a more detailed look at that last post, it's quite in depth ;)
