View Full Version : Vector optimization problem

I'm trying out this Flash vector graphics stuff for a change ...

anyway, to keep things as small as possible there shoulb be a minimum of vectors right ? Take for instance a simple wave : ~

Now, that shape can be drawn with 3 vectors. But every time I leave the symbol it adds vectors. I tried the optimization function, but it only removes a couple. When I manually remove the unnessecary vectors and anything changes (like me leaving the symbol or aligning), it adds the unwanted extra vectors again ! Argghh ! Flash hates me !

Anyway I can prevent this from happening ? Preferably in Flash itself. I don't want to have to resort to Illustrator or sumthing.

Hi sweetness, ;)

That's interesting, I just did a little experiment.

I found that if you draw a wave then convert to a symbol Flash adds extra points.

However, if you draw it within an existing symbol the three points remain.

Yet, if you copy the wave and paste it elsewhere we're back to Flash adding those extra points.

Most curious.

Anyhow, I did a search on the Macromedia Support site and I wouldn't worry about it:

It may be observed that points on Bezier curves change after certain operations drawing or editing operations. This is natural and will not affect the final size of the file.

Thanks sugar bunny !

Guess I'll have to make my peace with it then and go on with more important matters. You must be tired after all the research ! I'll go get the massage oil with essential oils and aloë vera !

aww, my love, you are just divine, and so thoughtful.

Hurry back, I'll be waiting babe. ;)

hmmm ... it seems there are no combination oils in the bedstand ... Do u want the one with essential oils, aloë vera or tea tree oil ? *preferably not the last, u know how that stuff gives me head aches, no matter how good its supposed to be for your skin*

I'll have you know that these hands are lemony fresh ! Maybe a bit cold due to the keyboard hovering ... but nothing that can't be fixed !

I hope I'm not interrupting anything... oh, goodness, miss Pinkaboo, I didn't know that... yes, I'll wait 'til you put your clothes on...

Well, my question is about the way Flash distorts automaticly the vector drawings that aren't .ai or .swf's. I mean, any other vector graphic gets all messy and ugly. The stuff with the vector added randomly is annoying beyond the size issue, because you lost control of certain areas you wish to smooth pulling beizer handles aroud, (unless you erase manually every unwanted node, every time you select the damn thing)... shame on you, Macromedia!

Ah! the question! is there any way to tell Flash "don't automaticly reduce (or distort just because) my vector artwork from, let's say, from CorelDraw or whatever other program! don't you see that the .ai files weight a lot?"???

Greetings

Sir Patroclo

Mylord, unfortunately there isn't any ! Read that tech note from Macromedia. Its explained there. the general idea would be that Flash works with 3 point bezier curves, while other programs work with 4 point bezier curves. They claim it doesn't increase he filesize (although I think this isn't true ...). I agree with you ... it's annoying ! It adds hours to tweaking graphics !

And for a lord ... where are thy manners ! Knock before entering the private quarters of a lady !
