I think you've arrived and answered your own question...right here is a good place to learn. Go hit the tutes...I would also buy a book that covers the basics of the program interface (which is not covered in the tutes).

If you're looking for a project, I suggest games. Build yourself some games. They teach you a lot of the ins and outs of actionscripting, animation, interface design and usability, AND they're more interesting to build than a widget site...which there seem to be a plethora of already.

Hmm, well, if the position's still available can I jump right on in there? can I? can I?

*pinK takes a swig of Vile's PBR, grimaces, plots, bounces up and down and sets Flash traps around Pixelwit's trailer, muahahahaha*

Suikoden - *pinK nods towards the guys, yeah what they said*

So I'm sprawled out on my couch watching Jerry Springer when I catch a glimpse of pink hair bouncing around outside my trailer window. Must be one a those new fangled varmints. I gets muh gun to go shootin and almost go rushing out the door arms and legs a'flyin with gun in hand. Then I see them. Carefully constructed Flash traps layed out around my pride and joy "Betty Streamline". Luckily I've been preparing for this. I break out a box of old Flash widgets and start disarming those nasty little Flash traps one by one. Finally! My widgets have served a "purpose". Yeee Haaaw. Feeling vindicated I opt fer yellin obscenities at the pink critter rather than shooting it.

I return to the warm familiarity of Betty and kick back on my LayZBoy, propping open the pink checkered curtains with a mud encrusted bare footed big toe and keep muh gun squarely aimed at the Pink one.

Crazy varmint.

Oh, and reread the link in my first post. :)

The Definitive Guide taught me the most about scripting/coding. It's clear, concise, has good examples, serves as an excellent reference and helped explain the basic concepts of programming.

I suppose it depends on what you want to learn, there are a lot of good books teaching different aspects of Flash. Interface (layers, panels, drawing...) Animation (making things move), Scripting (making things "go"), Interaction (making things do what they're told to do)...

This site has a book review section. Maybe you should start there. ;)

P.S. I won't answer any more of your posts until you fill in your "Location" in your user profile. It's all Mad_A's fault, sorry, there's nothing I can do about it. http://www.actionscript.org/forums/showthread.php3?threadid=15019

This is gonna sound like a newbie question.

But is actionscript the same for mx as it is for 5?

is this book for 5 or mx or does it not matter?

suikoden

pixelwit

Flash5 And FlashMX script have moderate differences. The book, ASTDG, is geared towards Flash5 scripting. You'd still probably benefit a great deal from the Flash5 version, but rumor has it a newer MX version is due out in the not so distant future (December maybe).

The choice is yours.

Took a look on Amazon.com and found this link: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/059600396X/qid=1033471512/sr=1-11/ref=sr_1_11/104-3269233-4291967?v=glance

If you buy a book from Amazon, try to buy it through a link on this site; it helps keep ActionScript.org up and running.

Books are very good indeed, and if you've got the cash or the contacts, they're a great place to start, but they have limited scope, even those based on 'real life' projects, which is why sites like this one are still popular I think. If you want to make some site for a specific company with specific needs, not everything is going to be coverred in your $50 book.
The best way to learn is of course to ask questions. Before asking though, search here as there's over 150Mb of raw text information in these forums alone!
I'm a big fan of tutorials, which is why I started this site and continue to work on it, so drop by the tutorials section and start reading.
I'd agree that gaming would be a good thing to get into to learn, but mor eand more nowadays I suggest grabbing a beginner title from Friends of Ed or New Riders (see the Books section for some reviews) and starting there, especially if you're not a programmer by trade, as they give you a good idea of how to work on a project, rather than piecing stuff together in some ad hoc fashion.
My 2 cents.

Learned the basics of tweening etc in Flash 4 on my old school. The rest, right here ! Contributors were (amongst others, but the first who pop up in my head) : Jesse, 20ton Squirrel, Red Penguin, Billy T, Pinkaboo, Vilehelm, Pixelwit, Farafiro, Mad_Andy ... some on more usefull matters than others, but still :)

As for myself, I learned Flash mostly from reading the Actionscript Dictionary from Macromedia's web site. Although it gave me great insight and the possibilities that I can do in Actionscript, the Friends of Ed books really showed me what I could do with that information.

Then, you just let creativity take over!

*gasp*

What are you saying Ricod?!!

Suikoden:*what kind of prettiness would you like pinkaboo?*

;) I like surprises, and contrary to popular opinion it doesn't HAVE to be pink and sparkly (but it helps).

Can't rightly say about books on Flash as I don't actually own any (apart from an old Flash 4 one I "acquired" when I got laid off, but that was useless anyhow). Actually, my main advice would be use the forums wisely and learn through trial and error. I find it amazing the number of people who could answer their own problems if only they actually bothered to think about it and experiment a touch.

PixelWit - Quit hollerin' at me will ya? Jeez, I dunno some people! You go 'round, lay a few friendly snares and all of a sudden find yourself at the wrong end of a barrel. Whatever happened to good old wholesome community spirit and International Relations?
Hmm is Jerry still on?

Ricod, this is SFA2 again, just to let you know that sfa has gone and locked himsef in the toilet once again. Don't know what it is about exactly but the only things I can hear through the sobs is "I hate that Ricod", "he doesnt consider me to be a contributor" and something on the lines of "poking at purple ear-lobes can cause cerebral discolouration"(I may have misheard the last bit). Again, I dont know what this is about and I always kind of liked you but please be a bit more considerate with him because he is a bit fragile and I would have to get violent with my Tai Lu Min HAu Wa (chinese for "the art of spreading very hot jam over the most sensative parts of a persons body using a copy of "Guns and Ammo"").

I dont know much about this forum, I just see my brother sweathing blood all day on it trying to help everyone but seeing that tg has 2166 posts and not even a mention, I dont know, but it just sounds so heartless. Well tg, as I said to my brother, that saint, (insert "eye of the tiger") dont give up, in life you will find people that will slam doors in your face and not give you the respect and appreciation you deserve but you must go on, pick yourself up and not look back and keep on helping becasue a year after you started, your goal is still the same - helping people. Go and make me proud. *clenches fist as sign of strength, trousers fall revealing polka dot boxers*

Now let's not get sensetive here people. Just because you weren't named in the seperate name part, you and I both know whats really going on.

(totally ignoring SFA until he hands over the VCR or whips out the hot jam) tg, you know what you did for me *pats on head* and how much its appreciated, not only in the ways of Actionscripting, but also on more important matters like the 'Vatsyayana Kama Sutra' *SPECIAL thanks from the mrs. for that one, we are almost at the stage of total unity*.

Since I immediately associate your handle with that, every time I mention your name, all the lessons come up making me immediately bother and harras Pink and you know how some people need to have a life besides stuff like that. Without her wandering around, this place will be left at the mercy of the 20tonners, the Vile and armies of Red Penguins, Burglar-Fluffy-EurovisionSongFestival-Participating-Hot-Jam-Wielding-Raccoons-With-Twin-Brothers, the farafiros and so on. Within weeks, this place will become a desolate area where the innocent will be horribly abused with Pamela Anderson bus ads everywhere and even the html will constantly smell of beer and cashews. Do we really want a community like that ?

RIGHT, that's enough, "forgetting" might be acceptable but purposely ignoring my contributions is too much. I would like to announce publicly that until further notice I will not speak to Ricod by way of telephone, forums, e-mail, PM, telekinesis, sign language, fax, or speach.
