laser burn effect

Hi guys, I want to create an effect to make it look as though a laser is burning a hole into a surface. I've seen this on some sites only I can't for the life of me remember where. I'm sure there is a tutorial somwhere, but I've drawn a blank on that too!!! Is there anyone out there who can help
