best dimension for standalone app

Im creating a non web based application and wondered what was the standard dimension to use that will have no problems across all monitors?

800x600 or 1024x768

im worried 1024x768 might be too big and 800x600 will be too small to work on.

any suggestions? Thanks

On my own website, less than 2% of users have their resolution set to 800x600. 1024x768 is considered a good resolution to target these days.
