Handwriting Effect

I am trying to create an animated logo. I want it to look like when it first comes in, the letters, Kat are being handwritten, I tried doing a mask to to do, but for some reason, it's not working. Please advise. Thanks in advance. ;)

There was a very old techique called Lazer (or laser) effect, that does something like this, it's basicly frame by frame animation, u say exactly u want it to last for how many frames, the you convert all the frames to a key frames.
Then start erase a bit of the word, logo, whatever from the beging of it, and start in the last frame
after u finish just reverse the order of the frames
