View Full Version : Does this 30 KB Flash movie load 3 minutes?

I created this 30 KB flash movie for a low paying freelance gig in which I still have not been paid 2/3 of the payment.

The client has complained it loads 3 minutes. She apparently has a T-1 connection.

At any rate, please check the site out and let me know how fast it fully loads and what type of internet connection you have and where you're viewing it from.

The site is at

Hi If you are talking about the little horoscope.swf, it loaded in about 3 seconds on my ADSL connection. No problems. And that shade of pink will look great with what I'm wearing today!

Thanks for your reply. 3 seconds doesn't seem that bad at all.

Does anybody know on average how fast a 30 KB movie should load?

If there are any "official" educational type of websites out there that gives statistics, please point me there, as I would like to provide that link to the client as proof that my flash movie shouldn't load that slowly.

I'm sure there probably is somewhere you can check all this.

However, If My calculations are right (which they frequently aren't) your 30 k movie should take about 12 seconds to load on a 28.8 modem, less than 6 seconds to load on a 56k modem and depending on your connection a whole lot quicker again on ADSL and Cable. Sounds like your client has the 14.4 k version of a T1 connection ;)

First thing to do is politely ask whoever it is to check your file on a couple of other machines (that are using a completely different internet connection, like a home or work account) to see if the problem persists.

Cheers,

Rupert

Your client may have a T1 connection, but if he has a really slow computer... it could still take a long time to load. You may want to check just how up-to-date the computer is...

Thnx for the feedbacks and ways I should handle the situation.

I did go to their office once and my website did load unusually slow there -- so it's probably how they set up their internet connection or server or something.

At any rate, I'm not too thrilled with the idea that I may get screwed by this freelance gig and blamed for how slowly the work loaded.

It seems the only solution is for me to burn the flash onto a CD-Rom and go to their office and present it there -- if they allow it.

i've got a cable connection on a g4 here, your movie loads in a zip (1 or 2 secs)

it might be good to check other sites on your clients computer, do they load equally longer than what you would expect? they should if you ask me

you could also try visiting a speed-test-site from there, (i'm sorry to have no url around) such sites check your connection speed - could prove to the client that their connection is very slow

last idea
check for a (damaged?) firewall on this slow computer? we 've had a case when errors in a firewall slowed down e-mail receiving or surfing...

succes!

Thanx for the tips, Tost.

I found a speed-test-site at http://bandwidthplace.com/index.html. I've also talked to my web host and they said if they had my client's IP number (which I don't have), they can do a traceroute to see how the connection is between their computer and my server.

As for checking for a damaged firewire at my client's place -- I'm not too technical to know how to do it myself and I'm not too close/friendly with them to ask. Relationship is already rocky with this flash-speed issue and a good possibility that I might not get paid :(

I would think that as long as you strongly emphasize to the client that regardless of how slow it might load in their office, their customers will have no such troubles. Mention that you've tested it from several connections (meaning, the connections of all the users here on the boards -- don't mention that you've had so many other people test it, clients can get upset about 'letting things out of the bag' too early)

A good idea would be to have them upload it onto their own server (wherever they will host it from when it's released -- assuming that's not the space you've been testing it on) and have them test the speed from there.

Another thought it that perhaps the first time they tested it, they didn't have the current version of flash, and the three minutes they mention actually included downloading and installing the new flash plugin (which can happen pretty transparently, so that an uneducated user might not realize what's going on)

It loaded too fast for me to really measure on my cable connection. A second, tops. 30k is really small. Remember on a 56K modem (the 'standard' for modems these days) it will be only 5 or 6 seconds!

Hi Lind!

I have a really bad 56k modem connection, cause I live outside town... no cable here..
Anyways it took me like 2, 3 seconds to get your movie going...
Do not know what your clients problem is... it is NOT hte movie!

I am on a dial-up connection , your flash loads in no time for me , the average for dialup is mostly 4K/second , I hope that help

maybe your client had an old version of the player which silently started to upgrade itself from the mm site (which seems to be the norm for the v 5 player - is your movie published for 6?), in which case the next time they check it it will be fast (it's plenty fast for me, 526K cable)
