Button with no hit state?

I'm trying to reproduce the movie that introduces the Get Property function (from the beginning tutorials). I can't figure out how to attach the button to the movie clip objects. I'm used to a button needing a hit state but it looks like only the up state is active. How does that work? and what is that "DO IT" button for in the library?
