Awesome Flash books here!

I've been looking to buy some books to help me along in my Flash education, but there are so many out there I can't decide (even with the help of Amazon reviews). So I've decided to make a post here and maybe some of the Flash gurus out there can help me, and the other n00bs, make some good book buying decisions, by naming some good beginner, intermediate, and advanced books. Thanks for any suggestions.

i'm a newbie.. so i haven't read too many flash books.. i started learning the program from the idiot's guide to flash.. it was ok.. great reader for beginners..

the book i'm currently read now was recommended to me by many people.. it's colin moock's actionscript : the definitive guide.. the reading is ok.. but i like how helpful the book is.. i post a question up on the forum.. then check out what they suggest in the book.. and i go on from there..

that's just my 2 cents.. i'm also looking for another book as well.. so i'll be back to check..

Well, many suggestions have been made. Did you use the search engine here already to see if this has been asked before ? If you do that, you will find a couple of threads convering this one.

A book I found really helpful was The Flash Bible. Now there's the Flash MX Bible and Flash MX ActionScript bible (so take your choice!) I found them encouraging, informative and enough in there to keep stretching you.

On top of that, it's great value you for money. It's the same price as most other Flash books, but has over a 1000 pages (over 3 times more than some books) covering pretty much all areas of Flash.

That would be my recommendation anyway;)

ok...but does the Flash MX Bible go into ActionScript really well?

Macromedia flasMX actionscripting (advanced training from the sourse) is best ive found it starts at how to actionscript basic effects and ideas and goes onot explain XML socket servers etc etc
I started from knowing nothing about AS now i feel i understamd many of the pieces of code i see (even if i cant replicate them yet :) )

Well, I haven't actually read the Flash MX Bible, but I'm assuming that they've just updated the Flash 5 Bible to include all the new stuff in MX ... in which case there should be quite a bit on ActionScript. Have a check before you buy it, but I'd be very suprised if there wasn't. How do you write a book that size without going into Actionscript?

However, as I say if you've got the hang of Flash Basics, you know your way around the interface and you know your keyfames from your motion tweens then you might want to have a look at the ActionScript Bible. That's dedicated purely to the programming side of things.

Almost anything by "freinds of ED" is good esp. if your a designer coming to programming.

O'reilly's Flash MX Actionscript the definative guide is definately a must have reference too. Having said that the online help in flash is almost as good.

Different books have diferent styles, its good to try and understand how you learn best, and then choose a book from there i.e. do you learn by working through examples? do you like to dive right in and play? how much support will you need? etc
