loading a movie clip is doing my head in!!

Ok I'm new to this but am trying hard theres lots of advice on how to do some great stuff, as long as you are supposed to know what the break down of actionscripts meen!

All I have is a shape which is a button when I click on this button I want this movie clip to load( movie clip is called 255), it is another graphic shape, it springs out and grows in size then stops and text appears over the top,

I need the original button to still be on the stage so I need the clips to be working one over the other so to speak sorry dont quite know the techy speak yet.

I know I need to attach some script to the original button, but what the hell it is is making my head hurt, I gather it has something to do with


_root.
gotoandplay "255"

or am I still way off target

if you can help then god may look kindly on you for saving my life before I hang myself over a menial task that everyone in the world knows except me

UPDATE ADDED

many thanks to tost, but I dont think I explained it right as the mc is not a seperate swf, just another animation or clip as you say which I need to play after clicking on a button, along with and inside the main timeline on the same stage

the Num with the loadMovie tells your swf to load on a specified level, in this case level 1
