Creating Random fades in AS3?

I'm trying to create a row of evenly-spaced, never overlapping boxes, that fade in and out and random times and speeds and only randomly displaying a range of boxes at a time (5-7 out of about 40). I would prefer not to use classes b/c the client asked not to. Any help?

I would eventually also like to have them flip in 3D space (Flash Player 10) at random speeds.
