Is there a way to make an Air program execute another program, or restart itself?

What I want is an air program that is capable of opening another air document. I have been searching and I've seen that without a third party program I can't open other programs, such as notepad. But is there any way to open anther air file?

Or, if that's not possible is there anyway to make an air document restart itself?

Did you ever figure anything out? I am trying to figure out a way to launch .xls and .doc files.

No, I never did. I just settled on the user having to open the program themselves.
