opening files from flash projector

I read the tutorial on how to open external files from a flash projector, but i haven't had any success making it work. My question is - does that tutorial only refer to Flash 5 and earlier - due to security changes in later versions... or does it work for all flash.
I am creating a flash tutorial to be distributed on CD and I have a number of documents - word, .ppt, etc. That I want the user to be able to open directly from the flash movie. Has anyone had any experience / success with this process.
