How to "break apart" bitmap picture?

I want to create a puzzle from a picture. How do I "break apart" a bitmap picture?

import the bmp, select it then press Ctrl-B to break it apart. then use the lasso tool (probably set to polygon rather than freehand) to select a "piece" - then press f8 to turn it into an mc
