View Full Version : GerberBars.com
My company just relaunched the website for Gerber Bars. As in Rande Gerber (Cindy Crawford's husband), not the baby food company. He owns bars/nightclubs all over the US, Mexico and Spain.
Front end development was a solo effort on my part. Design was done by a duo at the office, and the CMS was developed by a handful of acquaintances.

There is background music on the site. Volume switch is at the bottom if you want to quiet it.

Due to the bright nature of your background image, some of the white text is not easily visiblee when it overlaps with the bright yellow reflection on the small table at the bottom of your background image. Also, the server is a little slow and the loading bar takes about 20 secs to display, which is a little too slow for my taste (might be due to ping)
Apart from that, navigation is pretty simple to access and understand, and content is succint and not overwhelming. Good effort but has some niggling but obvious flaws.
I'm wondering if you've managed to get the error that I've been told about but cannot manage to recreate on any computer I try. You're saying the text is hard to read over the background image...are you not getting the color overlay on top of the image (but behind the content)?
I've attached a shot of what it should look like. Are you just seeing content directly on top of an image? (note that there are 10 different image/color schemes that it randomly chooses from on page load, so you might not get the same one when you go check again).
I've permanently cut the overall loaded data by 80KB now.
{edit} Implemented some sequential loading and cut the initial hit by another 70KB. Still need to load that 70KB, but now you're given a loadbar to see the progress for it.

For some reason the overlay decided to finally display, also, I see that you changed the color scheme for your site to blue from red, is thaat right?
It will be 1 of 10 random image/color scheme pairs every time you refresh the page. Please let me know if the site loads minus the gradient overlay again, and if you notice anything that seems to be happening to cause it.
How's the load time for you now? Thanks for the response.

um, i just saw one error. The title in some places have %20 instead of a space. may want to check that. I found it in the New York wetbar section tho I hadnt checked it elsewhere.
The window title? The URL? The navigation? The content header? Which title are you referring to? Can you snap a screenshot for me? Wetbar looks fine to me in all browsers. Thanks for the feedback.

Personally though, I'd prefer a more consistent look, seeing that all those different colors really bug the website in many cases, whenever I load up the site, I'm bound to find a bug, but with a quick refresh of the page, the bug is gone, but I see yet another new bug! Maybe its with the way you load the elements, could it be a possibility?
Could you be more specific what you mean by "bug?" Are you seeing mistakes, or do you just not personally enjoy the colors?

Some part of the background picture gets loaded above the text overlay, resulting in hard to read text. That happened onced, other times its just smaller errors in layering, so yeah, consistentcy is needed.
I've never seen anything happen like what you're describing. Can you snap some screenshots for me?
Great job on the site, very professional looking. Just a quick note, I also saw this bug -

The title in the browser have %20 instead of a space. e.g.
Whiskey%20Blue,%20Ft%20Lauderda...
Overall nice site.
Which title are you referring to? Is it something in the Flash or is it the title on the browser window chrome? And what browser are you viewing it in?

The title bar on the browser and tab title in Firefox both have the %20 instead of spaces.
Ah, it seems SWFAddress encodes page titles before sending them out. No idea why it would do that. Tweaked the SWFAddress code, problem solved.
That was a PC-only problem too. Mac browsers were all fine. Thanks for the response!

Yup, same as what he said ;). Firefox 3 on winXp here

I think you must have checked before I made the fix. FF3 XP doesn't show the %20 anymore for me.

Yup, the %20 is solved, and mysteriously, the moment I wanted to get a screenie of the bugs, they all disappeared! Murphy's law. :p
