Finding the state of an item in Flex

How would i know the item state, whether its open or closed through programming in flex.

I am using Accordian...

Accordion gives you insight into its state through selectedindex and selectedchild. Taking the former, -1 means the accordion has no children, 0 is the first child, and so on. You have one child in view at a time, therefore that child is 'open', and the other child are 'closed'.
