Dear people, i just created an iage in photoshop, a deinterlaced image type thing, you know alternate black and white lines all the way down, saved as gif, imported in to flash and it looks fine except half way down there is a big black line, the full width of image, any ideas.

uhm, nope no idea. Though I'm not too sure what you mean by deinterlaced either as from your description it just sounds like stripes? Which makes me wonder why you are using a gif like that and not drawing it within Flash?
Course, I might be might be way off track but..
Alternately I've found to reduce filesize on a repeating pattern (have done this to introduce texture) you can import a small gif containing just the bare essentials for the repeat. So for stripes, just a couple pixels of each colour. Break it apart, use the eyedroper tool on it and then just use the pattern as a fill.
Seems to do the trick rather nicely.

What happens when you uncheck the Smoothing option from the property dialog box of that GIF image???
