Attached is a very simple FLA consisting of a mask layer and a masked layer.
The mask layer is a rectangle. The
masked layer is text that moves up
(motion tween), for the purpose of
creating a scroll view.
Why does NOTHING appear when I
run the movie?
Simple stuff like this that should be
a no-brainer but doesn't perform just
makes me f*ckin NUTS especially at
1:00 AM.

hang in there! ;)
I'm not a fan of masks 'cause I'm a bit too dumb. I took a different approach. Hope this helps.

hey carlhustic, the problem was that your textfeild was static and thus you could not import the chars with the text field. I changed the text field to dynamic and then hit the character button and included all. have a look.

Thanks Dr Swank, your's works -
BUT ...
I took your advice - went into my original,
converted the text to dynamic, multiline,
and clicked the embed-fonts button.
BUT MINE STILL DOES NOT WORK!
It looks to me exactly like yours, except
yours works and mine doesn't. Do I need
to remove my text blocks first, then add
them again with the dynamic properties
set before I even put them in?
What is the subtlety here that I'm
missing?
I've re-attached my re-worked file

except that you forgot to actually embed all the characters. go back into your file, double click on the text, unlock the layer, click on text field, hit embed font button, hit embed all characters, and test. it shouyld work for you.

OK - that worked! Thanks
One thing that made me nuts is that in
another little experiment, I had some
masks, and created a moving text layer
that was STATIC, and it worked fine.
However, it was using Times New Roman
font, which is available without
embedding (I assume) and this is why
it worked, whereas the one that was
giving me trouble was using _sans.
So am I correct in assuming the following:
1) static text will work with a font that
does not need to be embedded.
2) for fonts that are embedded, it must
be dynamic text, and the embedding has
to be done correctly.
Anyway - thanks for another little
illumination on the path to Flash
Enlightenment

now that you mention it, you might just try to use static text and a different font. If it works then we are both a bit smarter. As for the font issue, well, how many volumes of screaming and cursing do you think are recorded due to the random havoc that fonts have caused?? It's one of the prices you pay for geeking.:)
I am glad to have been of service. code on you flashi and my the script be with you. dr.s
