View Full Version : 3d software
Hi,
Would like people's opinions on good 3D software for generating 3D animated humans and humanoid type .swf files. I currently have and use Swift 3D V3 and is great for objects and other misc. applications. I know that 3D Studio Max is popular but tends to be a bit hard on the wallet. Any suggestions for programs around the level of Swift 3D in price?
thanks

Well... Any of those??? Not really... :D
But I know pretty well about Maya and Houdini... At least I used to... I went to school for 3D in the beginning, and one day I got sick and tired of pulling points, so I've changed my major's curriculum track back to Interactive Media, basically back to programming... Need I say more??? :)

Then again ... you are progressing so fast CyanBlue ! I think I remembered your first post here (I believe you had a scrollbar problem or something like that ?) and you pm-ed me about it I believe ? (shame on you ! ;) )
And now you're way ahead of me *grumble* !
btw, making humans is always hard. If human anatomy isn't really your thing, take a look at Poser. But, I don't know if you can export to swf with that.
And yes, I like MAX myself, but have so little experience with it (and yes, its SO expensive !) Maya has a nice learners edition and its free ! Unfortunately ... no plugins - hence no swf exporter :( ...
Thanks for the responses. Of the 3 programs mentioned (excluding Swift3D which I have), any preferences?

skee...
If I were you and haven't tried any other programs, I'd try Amorphium first... Like most of the programs... You gotta find the program that YOU like best, like how interface is layed out, how good the output is, and such... Try it and see it for yourself... Create one little project with a couple of other programs, and you will know what to use by yourself... :)
Hm... I'd PMed you, Ricod??? I don't rememeber that... :D Hm... I personally did learn Flash fairly easy... I had used Director for a long time and the interface and other things that I initially tackeled was pretty much the same for each programs... Just the ActionScript part was abit different from Lingo... I haven't had any help from anybody else or any forums like this in the beginning when I started with F4... It wasn't really easy for me since I had no other resources but Flash manual... (How come I didn't think of browsing web to get more answer at the time... Shame on me...) After that, I didn't really dig into F4 at the time, and I got back to Flash when there was F5... I think that's when I found out the forums on the Internet... ;) So... Did you help me right, Ricod??? I think I still have problems using scrollbar... Maybe you didn't do it right at the time??? Hehe... I got a couple of scroller examples laying on my hard drive... Maybe I had good teacher at the time, and I wanted give it back to others??? Thankie... :)

Yes, I believe Amorphium is a complete solution, whereas Vectra 3d and Swift 3d are more Flash oriented ? Plasma isn't much different than those last two ...
*kicks CyanBlue* Well, maybe some people shouldn't pm the SECOND they don't get an answer (then again, I might be confused with someone else, I tend to purge people who pm me from my memory :D )
You have scroller troubles ? How can that be ? Did you just skip that part then ? From the looks of it you're way beyond those variables - loops - position troubles, right ?

So Cyan, I think am gonna use you for this ...(hearing him says: oh GOD, why can't I keep my mouse shut)
I wanna become a Director master and I even don't have the program yet, what do I do, where to start,.........
what do I need,
I know how to use Flash, Dreamweaver, Fireworks --- from MM family

Hey, Ricod... Don't say that... Plasma is whole lot more expensive than others... Rather than that, of course, not much of difference after all... I am not saying that the product is bad though... :D
Let me show you one quick example that I still remember about the loop in Flash... Darn it...
I was making some sort of Blocks game that you match three in a row and it goes away and such thing... Anyways, I needed to move the block downwards in the game, right??? I was trying to do that with the for loop to change the _y property of it in one frame... Logically it should be working for the newbie's eye, right??? How the !@#% should I think that the frame needs to be changing to get it working properly... Hehe... If I knew that there were online forums like this, it would have been easy... Yup... ;) Besides that, I was kinda skipping here and there believing that Flash looked so easy comparing to Director... Oh, well... I was wrong... Hehe...

Hey, farafiro... I hope you are really asking that question... :p
Well... I think the same thing applies to Director... Get the trial version downloaded and read the online manual to get yourself used to Director and do the example comes with it one by one... Once you got yourself comfortable with the program and know the basics of it, I guess it is the time to go out for information hunting...

And the mailing list that goes deep in Q&As...

Try Direct-L for general Director questions...
Try Lingo-L for Lingo specific questions...
There's gotta be tons more out there, but that will get you started... ;)
Thanks again for the 3D tips...I believe I will snag Amorphium3 and give it go.
On another note, I have a post in the Actionscript forum and am getting no bites. (rotating image wheel) If you have time, check it out...if I am not explaining myself well please let me know....or if it just sucks as a post...be gentle.

Maybe if we can get enough people here who know Director, we can add a forum ? I've seen more people asking about it, but there seems to be a lack of forums like this one on Director. I believe there are a couple of Director users here ...
And Jason, I was just janking ya ! ;)

Well, farafiro... Maybe I was from that kind of people, maybe not... :D I just thought that you were kidding because I KNOW that you are whole lot better knowledgable than me in Flash and other area... I guess I made a wrong assumption that you would know Director... SO??? :p
Ricod... Didn't I tell you not to play with my @$$???
Director forum... Doesn't sound that bad... But I am not sure... It's fairly because of the ActioinScript.org's name and what we have in the tutorial and movie sections... I know that many people use Director and Flash at the same time, and I know that there aren't many Director forums out there(many mailing lists though), but that doesn't make AS.org to provide one... Just my 2 cents...

Sure, it's not like I'm mailing Jesse right now, just thinking that it would be nice here. After all, it's not that we have a HTML forum or a Dreamweaver forum etc ... we could have forums on anything.

I might agree with you Rico, but then we really need Dreamweaver one and also Fireworks or photoshop, third party pro. like swish, and maybe freehand, .........

Sure ... but aren't there enough forums for those ? I do know there's a LOT of Photoshop communities out there already.

imo, max is the shiznit. i have a copy of 3ds max r4.2 and char studio. the best way i find to make a model of something that you need is to get a reference model. if i need to create original art of a satelite, i will go to google image search and search for a satalite, take that pic into illustrator or max or flash and draw right over it, delete the pic when im done, and then tweak it until it looks right. illustrator is my thing. check this out, i did this for a client at work, its all done with illustrator
well...the 3500 duckets that it takes to land a copy of 3ds Max is a bit much for me right now...unless the time I have been standing at intersection corners with my "Will Actionscript for Food" sign starts to pay off. djzombie187, your strategy for design is interesting. thanks

skee >>> Were you working on SWIFT D3 v3 ?
I was thinking of getting that...if you have, let me know what you think about it.

I personally think that Swift 3d v3 rocks. The program is pretty intuitive and you can do some very cool things with it without a steep learning curve. It exports vector and rastered formats and integrates well with MX. I am still a newbie at creating animations with it, but think it is awesome for the price. One cool feature that it has is Camera perspective animations...where you can create a framed animation easily from a target camera perspective. If you want to see something basic that I have done with it,
go here (http://www.theheavybag.com)
, select "Design" and you can see a camera perspective little diddy I made with Swift 3d. It is a bit bulky...but I am still learning how to optimize things for slower cpu's.
skee
...by the way. The walking man animation in the link I mentioned above was NOT made in Swift 3d....I lifted it from the movie section on Flashkit. Actually, I was looking for a program that could easily generate humanoid animations like this...it may be possible to do it in Swift 3d, but haven't got that far into it yet.
