View Full Version : web hosting for Flash MX/coldfusion

I have to change my webhost this year. The host I have now doesn't have cold fusion. I need a good affordable plan. Preferably around 15 a month.

Can anyone refer me to a good host?

Thankyou so much!

I'm looking around for exactly the same thing!

So far I'm evaluating ExpertHost.com; they offer $15 per domain ColdFusion hosting as well as swell reseller deals...

If you hop onto their hosting before I do - send me a buzz ;)

Btw, ain't it aweful how expensive CF hosting can get?!

I've almost given up on the idea of coldfusion.
I have several parked domains. It would be too expensive if they charged for each one.

They have an attractive reseller plan that I was considering:
http://experthost.com/Resellers/ResellerPlans.html

But since I just sealed a sweeter deal with a local firm, I'm probably opting for the simple 2-5 domains for a monthly $10 per domain..

Speaking of databases.
I just took a few tutorials on learning ColdFusion. It seems pretty easy to
set up the templates and assign the variables (much easier than PHP if you
ask me). BUT, I asked my current web host if they supported ColdFusion and
they said no and they only support mySQL databases and not MS Access DB's.

I thought that ColdFusion could work with mySQL right? If so, whats their
problem? What about Oracle, I'm assuming it works with that. I guess I'm
surprised that such a large hosting firm (Lunarpages) wouldn't have
ColdFusion support rigged up.

Any ideas or help or workarounds to this problem would be great
Thanks John

My guess is that it's probably because PHP and mySQL are both free, CFMX isn't.

I'm not sure if CFMX supports mySQL connectivity (I don't think it does).

If you want to use CFMX, you'll have to find a webhost that provides it.
There's plenty of them and some of them are not expensive at all. I'll be making
the switch myself pretty soon.
Wanted to for quite some time now, but have a yearly contract -- which expires
in 2 months :-)

I am using Coldfusion at the moment with MySQL, and I think i have read a
reference to oracle and Coldfusion MX at macromedia.com. That said my host
(mediatemple) are the only people I know of using mySQL and they have had a
few issues that have now been worked around. So maybe those issues are why
other hosts have not bitten the bullet.....

cheers

I am mainly a ColdFusion programmer.

Does CF work with MySQL: Yes
Does CF work with Oracle: Yes

Here are 2 great CF hosts:
www.crystaltech.com
www.hostmysite.com

I will be happy to answer any questions about CF if anyone has any.

That pretty much nails it.
At my host as well I am able to use access, MySQL, SQL - Not many use
the cf with mysql but as Clint pointed out it does indeed work.

Ok, I sent lunarpages the 'technotes' from Macromedia about setting up
coldFusion on Linux and how it does support mySQL. They just replied that
they do not support CF at this time instead of trying to tell me that CF only
works on Windows servers with MS Access databases like they told me before.

All you CF guru's - is learning CF and using it with complex sites (ecommerce
etc) worth it? Or should I just brush up on my php? If CF really is worth
it, I think I will have to find a server with CF support since you need
server integration to test your code.

This is my opinion:
ColdFusion is by far the easiest to learn and the fastest to develop with.
CF is good for anything, simple site to ecommerce. Its all in your knowledge.

I do PHP/ASP/.Net along with CF and I prefer CF because its so much faster.
Plus, the built in flash remoting help making Flash Apps much easier as well.

The one major down fall is hosting cost. PHP hosting is cheaper than CF.
I have sites at both www.crystaltech.com & www.hostmysite.com.

Crystaltech will be making plan changes on May 1st, one of which is adding PHP
to all their plans as well as dropping plan rates.

Of course PHP is cheaper than CF, mainly because PHP is open source and
support is free for the Hosting provider.

Now that BlueDragon is hitting the main stream, hosting (read: licensing)
costs will drop, which will allow the provider to reduce hosting rates.

For a hosting provider, the licensing costs for CFMX in its many iterations is
very high, and after almost a year since its release is still not yet a stable
product. It still requires the services of a programmer on the server to
manually alter the default configuration which should have been a part of the
install packaging. All this translates into expense that must be included in
any plan rates. Spending 10 -20k for licensing, plus hardware to serve a few
clients is just not yet cost effective.

There is still the problem of which license for should a provider purchase.
CFMX server is now is 5 completely separate versions, each with its own
development requirements and functionality. It results in a tremendous
expense for a hosting provider to provide support to the client, as well as
choosing which license will best fit its client base. On the other hand, CF
5.0 (and BlueDragon) are very stable platforms and is better suited to the
"one size fits all" which is necessary for the provider to server the largest
spectrum of the client base. This alone is one of the prime reasons many
providers (and developers) have not upgrades, if that is the correct term.

>From a developer's viewpoint CF is easy to learn, has plenty of functionality,
and is straight-forward and stable. It seems to run faster than most PHP
functions, and require less lines of code to do the same or similar things.
There are many e-commerce as well as database driven web sites in the
mainstream on this platform. I estimate it will continue to be profitable for
the developer for some time to come.

I'll second the props to CFMX; I've managed to pick it up and create
some rather extensive, db-driven sites with a lot of traffic in a
relatively short amount of time.

Recently, I've worked with PHP and it's not difficult--almost all the
languages are basically the same--but there are things that I look at
and think "CF would do it this way much more efficiently".

As far as hosting goes, I've used ExpertHost, and mostly I am not a fan,
but the host on NT boxes. I also have my own box that I do hosting on
for RH7.2 & MySQL & CFMX; let me know if there's interest--there's just
a small pool of people playing around there and it's not rigid or
anything.

Best,

Russ

I agree with Clint.
Allthough I'm no expert when it comes to ColdFusion and I've mostly been playing
around with Remoting (and haven't really built an all CFMX site yet), I can say
it's easy to learn and understand.
And Flash Remoting rocks... Being able to send and load data as Flash objects is
truely amazing.

Yes, CFMX hosting is usually more expensive, but from what I've seen, most
packages out there include ASP(.NET) and often PHP as well, which makes it even
more interesting, as you then get to use whatever you want. So, you pay more,
but you also get more...
Another thing I noticed is that some hosting providers charge twice as much for
the same package by another hosting provider, so taking a good look around first
is in order.
I'll keep an eye on crystaltech in the next couple of weeks :-)

Good to know there's some CF people on the list...

Muzak

i use this company... its $25 CDN so roughly $15 USD... it has everything you can imagine for support... its ridiculous, i have yet to need a service they don't have even on their base packages... and 24/7 support that i've used extensively with no hassles... i highly recommend... they're especially nice to developers, they've even helped me out with clients who were setting up servers and wanted advice... =o)... two links for you so that you know i'm not just trying to get jo money... =Op
