scratch-off effect

I'm trying to come up with an effect for a contest advertisement. I'm planning a scene that will have a coin symbol on the stage and a colored field that the user has to "scratch off" to reveal the winning number underneath. Obviously I figured I'd need to use actionscrtipt.

I'm wondering what the simplest way to go about this would be. Is there a way the user could paint symbols on a mask layer that will add up to reveal the name on the masked layer?

I'm open for suggestions of tutorials similar to this, or any relatively simple solutions.
