As I have recently said in another post :

You can't copyright a style - if this was the case what would be the point of actionscript or flash. Once a company had used a specific feature/style they could claim to be the brains behind it, and every other developer would be stuffed.

I mean what would designers do if someone claimed because they used a specific layout or colour scheme no other designer ever could. What if someone claimed to be the first person to have used an alpha fade in effect on text, does that mean the rest of us can't use it. Personally I am all for copyright law, but you can only copyright content not style or layout or colour scheme.

Should all fashion designers be stopped from producing shirts, because they all stem from a similar style.

Personally I am working on a project which involves creating a desktop style interface. Now I know ego has used this style, and no doubt several other companies - but its not their sole right to use such features...

I totally feel you johnbuk but the guy who is designing http://www.herraincoskipp.com/homebase/ was also on ego7's message board asking them for their source code and http://www.ergendro.net looks way too similar to ego7 for me to give them any props for originality...

Also if you need any help with your desktop style interface hit me up, I have some .fla source files that could help... :)
my email/aim is kane81@aol.com

all i can say is copying is lame unless it is for educational use.

in some sense I would agree, to blatantly copy and flaunt it as your original work is bad form. However like I have previously tried to explain, you can't help but copy styles sometimes. Everyone here has done it knowingly or not, can you say you have never used a effect which has already been used???
(Even if you didn't do so on purpose, I'm sure someone has already done half of what you can think of, that’s life)

o of course not...that is the great thing about learning web design...no matter what you are trying to learn, there is a 99.9% chance someone has already done the same thing. But a rip is a rip....we should all know the difference in copying certain techniques and copying entire websites!

The first site looks a little like ego7's (which doesn't bother me in the least). The _second site_ listed is pretty damn cool, although, I'm not a big fan of full screen sites... I'd like to know where to grab that forum code as well.

Speaking of _second site_ does anyone have any idea what this site is all about?

http://www.2ndsight.dk/

All I get when I go there is a grey screen with white bars and nothing seems to work - it's listed on mediainspiration.com as one of the most popular sites.

I would have to say the first site takes the Mickey a bit, it has basically been designed as a carbon copy of ego7.

The second doesn't seem to be what I would call a rip, yes he has used the desktop idea, but the rest is nothing like it.

In my opinion neither of these would bother me if I was ego7, both are inferior designs in coparision to www.ego7.com

Hey, great - thanks! I'll check it out... I've been weighing the pros and cons about adding a client extranet to 0factor.com. So far it seems like more of a waste of time than anything else. But if I do, I'll certainly look into adding a support forum. So thanks again.
