is it possible to make a button within a movie clip?

Sure. Just create your movie clip and your button. Then edit your clip and drop an instance of the buton into the clip. Actions on that button will now effect the timeline of that clip however, unless you use tell targets like:
_root.gotoAndPlay();

etc
