Brightness change

It's possible to change the alpha with actionscript, but is it also possible to change brightness that way ( either one object or the application )? I use multiple objects on top of eachother, so a black background and using alpha won't work.
Any ideas?

Okay, I got an idea which I have tested succesfully as well.
I just inserted a new movieclip on a new layer above all the others and on each of the frames of the movieclip I inserted a black graphic at the size of the application, having the the graphic's alpha increase on each frame. I simply used a function for the following script.

I'm a rahter curious type, so if anyone knows a different way, reply anyway.
