OK team, following the success of the first JFKC (http://www.actionscript.org/forums/showthread.php3?threadid=26086) we'd like to start another. Rather than me pick the topic this time I'd like to encourage everyone to post one or two of their best ideas for a JFKC here (read the linked thread above if you don't know what the JFKC is about) and then we can just pick one of these up each week (or fortnight) and run with it.

My suggestions are:
- Coolest FUI Component extension (like adding arrow-key support to the scrollpane).
- Ahh that's all I can think of on the spot!

Get posting!

i think there has to be an eye candy one, just goes without saying.

pom
05-10-2003, 05:12 PM
Ditto!

And by the way Jesse, I don't want to brag or anything, but I think I'm not a complete newbie with Flash, but I have no freakin' idea about how to implement an extension to the components.

Just my 2 Eurocents.

pom :)

Yeah true. I kinda assume everyone it a guru :) OK, but in terms of eye candy, anything more specifc or just general eye-candy?

littleRichard

eye candy is eye candy...anything goes IMO.

there was a contest on ultrashock about a year or so ago i thought was cool. basically everyone creates a program that looks & functions identically to one another and the highest framerate wins. there was also a 5k limit on the final swf.

Jesse
05-11-2003, 04:47 AM
OK so let's say the next one is as follows:
- General eye candy
- 50 lines of code max (?... I don't make eye candy so I don't know how much code it takes)
- Code only, no items in the library (again, is this possible for eyecandy?)
- Must use pink :) *My quest for the use of pink continues*

If ppl can agree, or dispte the above claims, once we've reached a verdict I'll post the official starting point for the second JFKC.

Oh by the way, did you all receive your newsletter last night? The system says they went out as they should have.

I didn't got any email from here for 3 days now
also:
Can anyone describe exactly what is eye Candy?? Is it just something to caught the eye??

pom
05-11-2003, 10:25 PM
Eye-Candy is basically what we did with Bit, Fara :)
Talking about the ol' Bit, his last contest was thematic (about plants), and I must admit that it was very cool).

Concerning the number of lines, we've seen during the contest that it doesn't mean anything, as some people achieved Asteroids, Snake and 3D engines in 25 lines ( ). A very good compromise is the file size. On a French board, the limit was set to 500 bytes, which is really not much. I'd say 1 or 2 kB is more than enough.

pom :)

Can U be more clear for the eye candy?
I don't get it...
Or in french pom ;)

pom
05-11-2003, 11:12 PM
C'est juste quelque chose de beau (doux pour les yeux, littéralement), qui ne sert à rien à part à être sympa à regarder :)

Thx pom to explain me waht eye candy is... ;)

Then I will put a photo of me and made it move around the scene. It should be ok no? lol :D

I think a 'menu' competition could be good.

An easy to 're-use and expand' set of funky menus would be very handy

(is this more of a component comp idea or would it be suitable in 'Jesse's F**king Kickass Challenge'?)

Jesse
05-13-2003, 06:28 AM
I like the idea billy but in under 25 (or even 50 lines) it's prolly not that easy to make such a great menu (go on Pix, I know you're sitting there thinking "Sure it is!").
It's a good one for a component competition but we're not planning another of those for a while.

Okay so it's true, that IS what I was thinking but... did you know I was also thinking this...

Since you seem pretty settled on the "25 lines and useful" concept I think you should keep away from the eye candy. It's been done. You started with one of the most boring Flash objects the TextField, why not just switch to a different slightly more exciting object and maintain all of the current rules.

I think the goal should be to take an object and make a prototype for it which will bennefit the majority of the Flash community. I also like the idea of taking code from a previous post and enhancing it.

I'm totaly agree with pixelwit. :D

Jesse
05-14-2003, 12:27 AM
See that was my goal originally witht he TextField thing and I think the submissiosn were all excellent and served the purpose well.

Care to suggest a new Object to base the 2nd one on?

farafiro
05-14-2003, 08:49 AM
yep, I like PI idea and also was thinking of this as it's a non-prized idea so "Why not doing something for all the flashers to get benifited from it"
so, here is my suggestion with the smell of PIX's one
let's think of some Arrays (as I'm dumb with them), prototyping (and donno how to prototype as well)

pom
05-14-2003, 06:06 PM
2 things:
1. Nothing visual could come from an array prototypes contest, and that's really too bad I think.
2. This is really overkilled. There are just so many array prototypes around the web that it would be hard to come with stuff that's not already on layer51... :(

How about the Color object? Not so well known, but you can do lots of things with it :)

littleRichard
05-14-2003, 06:42 PM
my vote is definately for eye candy. not that i think the usefull code idea is bad it's just that eye candy is alot more fun and i think more people would be interested.

Jesse is that your actual picture, on your avatar, because you look remarkably similar to one of the blokes out of "Scream". That bloke who survived the first one but died in "Scream2" don't know his name, just though i'd mention it though

if an eye candy thing maybe something that reuses a single image or say something along the lines of a couple of pre created mc's to use?

Billy T
05-15-2003, 01:42 AM
we could go round in circles forever trying to decide on a topic

My suggestion

start a new forum called "just for kicks challenge"

every week or 2 start a new thread that is a new challenge (all posts on one challenge would go in the one thread)

if people aren't interested in that particular topic they can wait for the next one

naming the threads appropriately would make it really easy for people to go through and scan for what they are looking for...eg "JFKC - The Array"

bye bye

xxlm
05-15-2003, 02:42 AM
Yeah good idea, but then who will give the contest idea?
A thread for it. Where people can post their whishes?

Billy T
05-15-2003, 02:47 AM
ok so have a seperate thread in the same forum just for that

Jesse decides what the topic will be us peasants will just have to live with his decision

cheers

Billy, I like the idea but I think no need for a seperate forum for it
maybe to moin the Projectors and Tutorials and make one instead

Yeah that's me... I can't think of which guy you mean, it's been a while since I saw the Scream flicks. It's nota great shot of me but it's about the only one I have digitally :)

Billy - I like your idea about a separate forum for the challenges. What do people think? In fact, if we had a separate forum, anyone could start a challenge. I'ms eriously not fussed so long as the goal is met: to develop the community and extend Flash's capabilites.

Jesse
05-16-2003, 03:46 PM
OK it's a Forum unto itself now...

Billy T
05-17-2003, 01:26 AM
Anyone can start a challenge...I like that

as long as they stick to a standard subject title etc...

is it possible to have a sticky that stays at the top of that forum that exp[lains all the rules etc?

cheers

time to get BIGGER !
how about this theme:
artificial life

i think this is really interestin, but i do not know how to figure it out within the normal 25 lines!

so what about a big contest! about 50 or even 60 lines?
i think it takes time to make a 25 lines thing, and the time difference will not be that big! So why not 50 or 60 lines!
there you have space to try bigger things!
the fact that there are no prices to win and no judges, allows that smaller projects can take part in it too!
lets say: the smaller the better, but without a limit!

so let me know what you think about it:)

I thought it might be better if we had a common base to work on, that's all. And also because it's probably difficult to draw the darn thing with Actionscript :|

hmm, i think this will not be that difficult!
who says that Artificial life may not be a triangle

Ok, Do these have to be straight actionscripting? Or could it be a mixture of like actionscript and php? or actionscript and embedded movie clips?

Like if I was like who could create the best instant messenger in flash off their own code or off of a modified entry?

Just some thoughts... hope I didn't confuse you guys.

somehing I saw at the bit-101 forum
http://www.bit-101.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=829
It was about a contest for writing a connect 4 AI.
The contast ended in april :(

But I think it is a good idea to write a kind of battle ai and let it play against another one.

Anyone an Idea for a battle AI game?
The concept is, that both ai's get the same Information.
let's say in a ballgame:
every ai get's the following:
x,y,xspeed, yspeed of the ball
x,y,xspeed, yspeed of the ai player
x,y,xspeed, yspeed of the enermy
borders of the goals
, or something like that.

(the game would be like www.bit-101.com 's laboratory file of 17.10.02)

tell me what you think about it, and if you got an Idea for the game

McGiver
