without apache

OK, I have been reading about remoting and AMFPHP over the past few days. Still a little over my head but I am starting to understand a little. Id like to write an app that uses the amazon.com webservice, but I want it to run on the users HD (.exe), instead of a Rich Internet App. Would each user have to have a server running (like apache)? I was hoping to only require them to have an internet connection.

Sorry, I guess im still a little confused....

any info would be helpful.
