I hear it's very ...er... interesting. It's like one huge database isn't it?

There's no way a Windows alpha is going anywhere near this machine. I have enough trouble with their finished products ;)

yeah the new file system is based on MySQL so apps will have to be re-written for it (like MacOS9 to OSX). Theres also other junk about rights management and file sharing and whatnot. There are a bunch of reviews/screens out there of the alphas etc. I know http://www.winsupersite.com has a review or two about it (with plenty of screens)

oh the alphas are not buggy! thy just add the bugs when they're done, so that they can release a better one 3 Jears later!
Seems like they're running out of names! "Longhorn" hahaha

Heheh. That idea really appeals to me. Imagine how much fun it would be working in the bug-adding department.

I read this a while back and found it interesting (about unidentified services running on XP) http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/winxp.htm

I'd like a Windows2003 type OS, Something that's built with the mimimum of services running, so that I can choose what services I want , and something that would allow me to run normal consumer applications like anti-virus software that doesn't cost $1000 per license.

I don't like these OS's that look like childrens toys and try to second-guess everything for you. Surely there's a market for a midway product?! I don't want Linux. I want something with an easy to use GUI, that runs all my applications, but doesn't assume I'm a complete idiot.

*dreams*

yes, of course! we all want a os like that!
but you can take more money if you put in a simple mp3-player, movie-player, a burning program, and all the other things nobody really uses!

acording to one of articles from senoculars link i think you might be out of luck.

Longhorn is going to have some heady requirements, at least compared with today's Windows. The bare minimum Longhorn system will have to be able to display at least 1024 x 768 with 32-bit color, and it must include a hardware accelerated 3D video card with at least 64 MB of RAM. But this is the base requirement: To take advantage of the fun eye candy Microsoft has planned, you'll need advanced video hardware with at least 128 MB of RAM.

who the hell do they think they are, and what the hell are they thinking they are up to create? a high-end-game?
It's a OS, and I do not need 3D grass effects or lense flare in my windows!

Yeah it's their new policy: Bluescreen or death. They stand over your shoulder whilst you do it ;)

I have this vision of two nerds dressed in Blues Brothers suits and shades and some kid with his arm up his back screaming: 'No. No. I want it in the H: partition'

I agree with Sualdam. Don't buy it if it doesn't work for you.

I'm not at all trying to be a jerk, please don't take it that way. But, it's the same for food. If it doesn't taste good, or has bugs in it, you don't have to buy it. Granted there is less of a selection with operating systems, but, my point is, there is still a selection. To take it to the extremes, we could raise some working capital for Macromedia to develop an OS or something... Hmmm:p

"I want it in the H: partition".
Is it just me or does that sound..... nah, forget it.

I envision the two guys looking more like Agent Smith from the Matrix.

Maybe Steve Ballmer just comes around to your house and dances in your living room until you Give in. Now that would be scary. Plus, he'd eat you out of house and home before he left.

I'm going to get my own computer after the summer (I'm 14) So I might get Longhorn, is it a free download or do you have to pay?

Ah, hence the name. Will we see you around these forums as Colin15 next year then? :)
Crikey, I didn't realise bit101 was such an old duffer :p

Well, it depends on your interpretation of free. Some people around here may say yes, but legally, no, you will have to pay.

Unless you're building your own pc then I doubt many places will offer you the choice of anything but XP unfortunately.
Regardless of buying ir building, find out when Longhorn is due to be released (and add another few months onto the date). It may not even be around by the time you get your pc up and running.

Probably, or just to Colin. I better think about that soon... geez, I'm on like 4 forums as Colin14... that'll be hard to decide. I'll post a poll later, my birthday's in October :p

the problem is, that with most pcs, you get windows automatically, and do not have the possibility to choose!
(the disadvantage of a monopole)

-->hahaha a microdoft os for free hahaha
:D :D :D

@annexion: yeah a macromedia OS, that would be cool! :p
