okay, when I do a search here on females, girls or women, all I get are site checks with lots of nude women (no problem there) BUT what I am trying to find out is: how many women actionscripters are there that regularly use this forum?

Is there a way to do a poll on this or an existing thread?

Thanks. :)

I was wondering what a 'feamle' was until I opened the thread

maybe thats a reason why you cant code very well ;) tighten up your typing skills and you could be a master.

just because I sometimes drink martinis alone does not mean I'm an addict, and maybe that is why I can't type! :D

in other words, it's not my fault, it's a vicious cycle and maybe my lack of coding is a cry for help!

i drink
i code
i mistype
code fails
drink more
type worse
code? what's that?
olives
more olives!
why am i typing?
where's the gin?
. . .

time for an intervention!

boohoo! :(

he he, you are correct, the typing is something I need to work on! but "master"? ha ha, you overestimate me! :)

so does this mean there are no females here!?!

there were these two guys in college who were real anomalies - they would drink when they coded and got better as they got more drunk (well up to a point ;)) The only problem was that the next morning, when they looked at their code, they saw a bunch of unusual variable names (usually perverse) and had no idea what they meant or really, even how the code worked at all :D

hmm, that's really fascinating!
he asked how many females are inside, and instead of an answer a discussion about drinking and coding started.
the same happende to the I love this song... thread.
The kilopost thread ended with a discussion about breasts!

seems it' impossible to escape our real charakter

I'd say 3 regular users subquark that I know of.

Didi
Pinkaboo (who hasnt been on for a while)
and me

does that answer your question?

and why do you want to know anyway?

well, my wife has always been a "big shot" at colleges and universities (and makes more money than I), my daughter is budding opera singer and I have taught college for the last six years and have always felt that females are more intelligent than males (in the US, 65% of college students are female, but as long as we applaud athletic ability over academic ability, this goes unnoticed)

so I was curious about the number of female coders out there. i figured that this field is representative of the rest of the western work model, but it seems to be even more male dominated.

so only three!!!! gee, that is not much. so bluegel, why do you think this is the case in the Flash world?

i stongly disagree with that comment.
male and female have different intelligence.
male more broad.
female more detailed.
i guess programing require more broad view of things.

I can't see why there's any need to specify who is smarter than who.

Males and females are complementary - neither works fully without the other.

OK. There are some weirdos who'd have you believe that that only applies to every single species on earth EXCEPT homo sapiens, but fortunately there are medicines for people like that :)

The fact that there aren't as many females in this industry as males - as reality - speaks volumes more than any perceptions we might have about what SHOULD be the case.

The UK government gets these dumb ideas every now and then to FORCE more women (or other minority group within a sector) to take up whatever it is at the time.

Fact is, they have minds of their own, and if they wanted to they would have already.

Colin Campbell

Its funny to read this. Theres no gender who's smarter. It depends on the person and how that one person cultivates their knowledge. No gender is smarter by default.

"Fact is, they have minds of their own, and if they wanted to they would have already."

Well, I believe that the paradigms of Western Civilization are a large factor on the ability of women to enter the work place on an even footing, this is easy enough to observe by looking at labour statistics.

"male more broad.
female more detailed.
i guess programing require more broad view of things"

However, I would argue that programming is an exteremely detailed, if not myopic, activity.

Well, it's only my opinion and not intended to get anyone defensive. Perhaps as equal sexes we should go back to talking about beer and boobs . . . as McGiver indicated earlier. :p

Hey, it's a discussion. No one's getting defensive (or offensive) yet ;)

Paradigms of Western civilisation may well be a factor on the current balance, but who says that we are the guardians of 'the way it SHOULD be' and thus authorised to try and shift that unnaturally?

The barriers to women entering whatever professions they like are far smaller - even non-existent - than you suggest these days. Hence, if they wanted to enter the IT industry in bigger numbers then they would.

From what you said earlier, maybe they realise there's more money to be made elsewhere? Maybe the common male desire for techie stuff is what drives more males into this industry?

Where is it written that there should be an exact 50:50 balance of men and women in every profession? That would be infinitely worse, wouldn't it? It would be totally unnatural.

As long as there are no physical barriers to women taking up a position, where's the problem?

In any case, paradigms of other civilisations put women WELL behind where they are in Western civilisation, so let's not be THAT harsh on the current status quo.

probably better than an discussion about beer

McGiver

hmm, a discussion about the differences between the genders?
you guys really blast my english knowledge.

OK: here are my experiences:

males think more logical. In germany, we can choose in 12.th class in which subjects, we want to write our "Abitur", a kind of final test at school.
There are much more males, who choose Math or physics, and only a few females, who are not as good in those subjects.
females learn faster, and are abled to do more things at the same time

Colin Campbell
06-15-2003, 05:03 PM
hmmmm, at my school theres a balance between the 2 sexes. Me, of course, being the smartest :p j/k theres some kids at my school who have 98% averages, I'm only a 90%. But thats only because I'm taking all the subjects I suck in now, and not in grade 11 and 12.

from the igloo i live in and surroundings.. I find that in my HS that I used to go to and now in university

females tend to try harder than males..
males are such slackers...
but theres always exceptions

McGiver

I agree! females definitely try harder.

that's my problem! I do not try too hard. If i can choose between flash and learning for school, i always choose flash :D

"Me, of course, being the smartest"

I love it, me too! :) Hey, all I wanted to know is: how many girls?!?! Bluegel says three. Gee that is like hardly anybody!

very true about other cultures, very good point :)

"i always choose flash" - man, I thought school was easier than this!!!:(

oh well, sorry for the fuss and let's all get along (but here it looks like we will be mainly huggin' other guys!) :D

There are more females on this forum, but I think it's a matter of them feeling intimidated or afraid to ask questions because they are new.

Sualdam
06-15-2003, 10:13 PM
And I'm sure that the 'beer and boobs' talk was nothing to do with that :)

<edit>Actually, that's a thought

Maybe it isn't the fact that too few women enter certain industries, but that too many men do?

That'll keep me awake tonight. ;)</edit>

Just to add my euro cents...
I think (most of) women are less interested by new technologies. That's all. That's why there is few woman coder...

*I think*

Gnagnagnagna....

I didn't say that too. Ok! Just that most of the women are not so interested about new technologies. Di dyou ever see a 15 girl spending 15 hours a day staying front of a computer...

I don't think so...

So are you suggesting that if women simply don't want to go into certain male-dominated industries then they are wrong  And all because of this false belief that everything should be done 50:50 by men and women

You seem to imply that if women are turned off by technology (or anything else) then they are oppressed and hard done by.

This was my point: if women don't want to do something, but that means that there are more men doing whatever it is, then that is just the natural way of things.

subquark
06-16-2003, 03:04 PM
ah, my initial point has been well proven, women are more intelligent than men. Who in their right mind would spend 15 hours a day in front of a computer!?!?!? :D

I know I often do . . . :(

Where did the 50:50 thing come from?

C'mon now, group hug (although it's only us guys, where is bluegel?) :p

Sualdam
06-16-2003, 03:58 PM
It was me that introduced the 50:50 thing - for brevity. It is just a way illustrating any perception that whatever the current balance it ought to be something else.

There's a lot of truth in that statement about spending time in front of the PC. ;)

Group hugs are girlie things. :p

subquark
06-16-2003, 04:38 PM
unfortunately, I believe that is the key issue, too much time doing this stuff :(

Group hugs are girlie things. Yeah, I think you are correct there too!

Let's just get back to our computers (oh wait, we never left!). Geez, this is worse than living in the matrix . . . ;)
