How much does a client (On Average) pay someone to design a website that say needed a database for User Registration?

I'm asking this question because i want to know about how much money is in this profession.

We are not allowed to discuss pricing on this board other than i very general terms.
Anyway I dont think theres a average on this as a professional firm would have templates for this that they can implement in just a moment. And the pricing for that would differ from almost nothing to a silly overcharge.

a lot of my stuff is free :( but, if I was going to say something on the forum about pricing, i'd go $75/hr. But since I can't, I won't . . .

Depending on how badly I need a job, I can get as low as $0.80 (USD) an hour. ;)

anyway, I will move this to the General hat as it belongs to there and also search there, this has been asked b4

"We" would mean all people on this forum.
Ive seen many posts stating that its not legal to discuss pricing, but it may have been another forum. So I apologize if thats incorrect.

It's not illegal by any means.

It may be a conflict of interests in some circles, but it's not against the law. At least here in the states.

webguy
06-27-2003, 03:02 PM
annexion I actually do think it is borderline illegal here in the states, it can be construed as price fixing.

annexion
06-27-2003, 03:12 PM
The general rule provides that a vendor may not in combination with another vendor agree to set a certain price thereby creating a fixed price within a certain market. A business acting on its own and not in concert with another may use legitimate efforts to obtain the best price they can, including their ability to raise prices to the detriment of the general public. Also, conformity of prices within a given product is not illegal unless such conformity was created by a combination of vendors agreeing on a set price.

price fixing
n. a criminal violation of federal antitrust statutes in which several competing businesses reach a secret agreement (conspiracy) to set prices for their products to prevent real competition and keep the public from benefitting from price competition. Price fixing also includes secret setting of favorable prices between suppliers and favored manufacturers or distributors to beat the competition.

Talking about prices on this forum is NOT illegal. If we were working together, in secret, to set the price of our services without the knowledge of the public, then yes, it would be. But, asking people what they charge for a specific service, and then adapting your price to reflect the current market rate is not illegal. Especially since one person asking someone else what they charge on this forum is not an attempt to rally up the troops and set a going rate. So, in retrospect, we are obviously NOT doing that here, so don't get some of these younger people scared to say anything on a forum.

*Edited*

And I doubt any federal goverment is going to beat down our doors and arrest us for talking about this on a public forum on the internet.

And also, I would say a large part of the people here don't live in the states anyway. So, this explanation I've made isn't applicable to those people.

wow 75 bucks an hour? About how many hours does it take you to design a website? I mean, couldnt it be easy to tell your client "I worked in this project for 100 hours" when in reality it could of only taken you 70 hours. Am i right?

annexion
06-27-2003, 04:26 PM
Well, that's a whole different issue.

A particular person's honesty to another person isn't covered in price fixing in that regard. Yes, you could viably lie about it. But, you do it too much and you won't have many clients to charge $75 an hour to.

well im 15 and i can make a good £50 hour pretty easily... with tight buttocks, many boys make that kind of money here on South Beach! :p

How long to make a site? Well, this one www.teamwiggleworm.com I made in 19 hours straight, but it's very simple.

But how long is a tough question. Do you have to take photos and create art, or does the client have web ready art? Do you have to write the content or does that already exist? Are you starting from scratch or doing a makeover? How about audio and video? Submission forms, secure transactions? Do they have an existing domain name and host? Yada, yada, yada . . . .

I have one site, a very small one for a college program, that should only be about 8 pages and I've been working on it since April 2002!! But the client is very slow to move and get me the files they have. Now, right when they are ready to go, the main college site is changing it's look! I have already been paid, so at this point, I am quite disgusted with it all . . .

So how long? Many answers to that one and lots of similar horror stories, but there are some good ones too. Good luck!

Technically, it could be turned against you over here too if anyone had the inclination or money to do it.

The same thing happened over here with stupid claims for 'accidents' and other stuff that didn't really happen. Who'd have thought that some idiot could claim for tripping over a kerbstone whilst drunk? Or a convicted felon claim for loss of earnings because he was shot whilst burgling someone else's house?

If all that can happen over here, why shouldn't being sued for discussing prices also be on the list if you aren't careful? ;)

well, they'll sue Jesse, he lured us to this forum and encouraged us to discuss wages! :p

Ten years ago, here in Florida, a man broke into a house and while he was stealing the owner's goodies, trip on the stairs they were in the midst of remodelling. He broke his hip in the fall and subsequently won a lawsuit against the owners. Seems that the construction on the stairs was not properly marked to prevent someone falling (I guess you need some flashers and construction lights?!?!). How's that for absurd!!!!!!

and you supply part of the business with making your $75 /hour right well sonic_2k_uk, would you like some freelance work? ;)

That makes me angry just reading it.

We have a current situation in the press (other than that guy who shot the burglars) where some...

Insert: Seriously, I have no problem with the UK taking in true asylum seekers and I would have no problem if any were moved into the house next door to me. I mean that genuinely

...asylum seekers are suing the British government because their house back home had a garden and the furnished flat they are being put up in doesn't.

How stupid can people - and the law, for allowing it - really be?

Well here in the US, we are about to start our first wave of lawsuits against fatty foods, Just like the big tobacco lawsuits of a few years ago!

you can always sue the government if you dont get one :D then buy a luxury house in london that doesnt have a garden and get more money... thats kinda worrying actually... it will be the next thing to happen over here :(

lol its funny how everyone not from england likes the queen, but most ppl in england just see royalty as a way of escaping the real world, i mean why should she be so lucky to become the queen and they dont even do any real duties nowadays, just do good for tourism - is most ppls view...

Ah well. I'm in favour of the Euro.

But we haven't got it yet, and won't for a long time, I guess. Too many people who still think we have an empire and keep going on about 'the War' (Second World War, that is) like it was yesterday - and tomorrow... :(

i guess to be a good freelancer... u gotta know ppl =/ hey timmee101, well it is slow to get going and as for me, I have to do freebie jobs on occassion to keep it going. Just pick the freebie jobs carefully, choose ones that sound fun to do and do them like you are getting paid $1,000,000 and you will start to get business.

a good place, states and Canada side, to find freebie sites is through www.craigslist.com, but you only get like one answer out of every 20 emails you send. Hang in there!

and go to each city and to both arts &media jobs and computer jobs

email everything that looks interesting because you won't get many answers, and then once you have a few sites done and added to your portfolio, get business cards and go to restaurants and shops in your town and see ALOT of people . . .

good luck!

hmmmmmmmm I think my personal site is decent
nothing blows u away........... but something that does look very nice IMO.......

n i recently working @ my intern has picked up some ASP and even more PS skills since I worked with these like 8 hours straight........ n straight notepad html coding since the computer there sucks.....

but still...... i dunno about going store to store...how do u approach that?

subquark
06-29-2003, 07:23 PM
well, start with local places you go to (restaurants, skate shops, bike stores, record shops, whatever).

my first site came out of my love for mountain biking and I made a site featuring a few local parks here, then I got a real gig (actually ended up being a few bucks and hour) from that for a putting on a mtb race series . . .

just be confident of your skills, don't lie about what you can do (Oh, I can make a site like amazon.com in a few hours) and think of ways to help whoever (pizza restaurant owner, etc) get their message across. maybe let them know that you will do a few rough layouts for them to look at, no strings attached.

I even had to bring a laptop into a restaurant guy because he had never been on a pc but he had customers asking him about why he did not have any info on the web.

I hope that helps. :)
