View Full Version : Welcome to the new server

Well boys and girls, here we are on the new server. We worked all day yesterday to bring everything across and reconfigure stuff but needless to say there will be some errors that will pop up and we need you *insert Uncle Same poster here* to tell us about them.

The new server has a fatter inbound and outbound pipe as well as a faster CPU and twice as much RAM, HDD, etc.

For the moment the Advertising system isn't working. We're going to fix that up later today. Other than that, if you find broken links or ugly error messages, or something that doesn't look like it used to, please be sure to let us know via email. If you experience email bounces or anything non-WWW related, let us know about that too.
Also if you experience latency or slow periods, please be sure to let us know where you come from and the time and day (in GMT if possible) that the problem occurred.

We’d also like to hear any positive comments you have. Notice a substantial improvement? Better load times? Faster searches on the forums? Post your comments here or email us.

Enjoy!

I was trying to send the PM, but I get this...vBulletin Message
Sorry! You cannot send that message at the moment because the administrator has specified that you may only send one message every 60 seconds. Just for the record... That was my first attempt to send the PM... I didn't send any other PM before that message, so 60 second rule didn't apply to this... :(

CyanBlue

Timezone messed up the thread order again... :p

My reply that goes with the 60 second PM rule was replied after the pixelwit's reply... and I see that pixelwit and Strok's post is marked for 6/27, and it still is 6/26 here in EST... :D

I just noticed that the last person who posted information seems to be displaying incorrectly. I guess this is time related too but thought I'd mention it as I don't think anyone else has brought this up specifically.

I clicked on the arrow to go to the last post in a forum and found that the last post wasn't written by the person I expected it to be. This in itself wasn't too unusual as the database updates and people are continually posting. However I went back to the front page and refreshed and Pixelwit was still listed.

So I clicked on the link to Pixelwit's info as I was going to investigate by doing a search of all the posts he has done. Except it took me through to Pellepiano's info instead.

If you click through to the info on any of the names listed as last posters on the main page you get the info of a totally different user come up at the moment.

Thanks

K

Just checked, I am on the correct timezone.

Was also getting confused because I forgot that the time in my forum preferences were still set to GMT not EST (GMT -5) and have just thought to correct that. Everything is still screwy though and the time is two hours ahead.

Still don't get no email notification and not able to send any PM...

PM, I think what's happening is that because I have sent some before the clock has been changed, and the 60 second rule is checking on the current time that I press the send PM button and the last sent time, which is tomorrow after the clock has been changed, so I am not able to send any PM??? Maybe??? Maybe not???

Arg... This time change sucks... Can we have a time machine??? :D

Nah... I'm just kidding... Thanks for all the work, Jess and Strok... Much appreciated as always... :)

... I was surfing the forum, when i see the thread 'new server'.
Oh yes... I've already forgotten that there was problem. Meaning that for me all is ok now. Loading time are ok, and all the functionality I use work.

Great job... Really ;)

Hm... I see another strange thing... :(

There are 24 people in the ActionScript forum, and the main forum list says 19 members/14 guests... When I count the number of people in there it is 16 people... :(

Maybe it is nothing serious, but there could be some unlogged member within it... so I 'm just posting it... ;)

yes it is much better, I noticed earlier that when I would go back to the newest posts page it would update them immediately so the post I just answered would be at the top. Previously it would just load the version I had already viewed, so it would not show new posts since I did the search.

Strok

We just changed the timezone.
You may see some time difference in posts in next 5-8 hours.

Times are 3 hours ahead for me.

Went to the UserCP at 12:00 noon

Made sure I was set for the right time zone and saw that the server said "All times are GMT -5 hours. The time now is 02:58 AM."

What's up with that?

Jesse, Strok

why the MEMBERS area is disabled by the admin??

Jesse
07-16-2003, 07:40 AM
We disabled the members list because it was being abused (or so it seemed) by some users. We may activate it again soon.

I'm not so sure, you'd have to ask Strok about it. It was being hit (visitied) hundreds of times from the same IPs within a short period of time and at the same ime we were being port scanned and had a denial of service attack. We took all actions we could to elimnate excess load, which included disabling the member list.

Jesse, I noticed that today (behind a corporate firewall) the board was running very slow.

Everything was loading, it was just slow. Approx 12.00-16.00GMT.

Other sites seemed OK. Just thought you'd want to know.

Jesse
07-16-2003, 09:21 PM
Forums too? We've axed the firewall-problem-causing advertising code on the forums for performance reasons. I'm finding it's about as fast as always today... Not aware of anythign whcih should be slowing it down.

It was being hit (visitied) hundreds of times from the same IPs weird stuff! Man, you guys know so much about so many things! I find it fascinating. So what could be the purpose of this kind of action? The only valuable information might be, what, a someone's domain name? Just curious . . .

Hell I can't get the damn ball to go accross the screen but people out there can figure out how to do all this wacky stuff!

Well, good luck with it all and I love this forum. Really awesome and incredible people. Thanks! :)

We've had a couple of users say they've been running automated refreshing or scripts on the pages in question over the last 48 hours. For future reference, we'd prefer if people didn't do that because it causes extra load on the server. We'll likely re-enable the features soon.

subquark
07-18-2003, 08:29 AM
automated refreshing or scripts holy crap! I am such a neophyte! I would of never thought of that (let alone figure how to do it). Thanks for the explanation though.

I guess you realize that you are like a drug dealer now; you've got people so hooked on your site that they resort to that! :D

Well... Subscribing to the thread won't do much...

The reason why xxlm is doing the refresh in every 30 seconds or whatever is to see if the other person who have asked the question has replied to his own reply... That's all there it is to know... xxlm is too anxious to participate in this community... That's why people who are guilty as charged are doing something to get things work better for themselves... That's all... :)

Then I spent 20 seconds trying to think of a good reason to appear online. And couldn't. :)
