A pad of paper. The odd part was I was really excited about that pad of paper, because I'd been without a good one for a while and was doing all my layout brainstorm sketches on the back of my hand and forehead.

I just bought me a Sony MZ-N 707 Net MD Walkman. A touch on the expensive side, but a shite load better than a Mp3 player thingy and loads smaller and lighter than a CD Walkman. 5/5

The new mogwai (http://www.mogwai.co.uk) album "happy songs for happy people" which came with a totally unexpected (but really quite cool) bonus of a demo copy of Cubase SX and the individual guitar, bass, drum etc parts for one of the songs on the album to remix. 5/5 :D

Well I've just gone and got meself a pair of trainers for the 5 a-side team I play for at work every Thursday. I only had a normal pair, so I was sliding around everywhere on the astroturf ... but these have got nice rubber studs on them - and all for a mere £20.

Bargain :D

Colin, for future reference...

Spelling and grammar are by no means indicative of intelligence. F. Scott Fitzgerald, among many other notable writers, was a very bad speller. Highly intelligent people may be very poor spellers. Writing derives from speech, and spelling is simply an attempt to capture the sound of a word through conventional symbols.

Not until the middle of the eighteenth century did English spelling achieve something approaching uniformity; and even by then, pronunciations had changed markedly in many respects.

Essentially what I am saying through a long winded response is... Spelling doesn't matter here. So long as the message is expressed and received intelijiblee. ;)

Oh yeah, and I bought an Archos Multimedia Jukebox a few months ago... I love it. 20 gigabyte hard drive, camera attachment, lcd screen... Oh man, it makes me want to kiss it. :p

Now here's a good thread topic if ever I saw one :)

I'm afraid I disagree somewhat, since knowing correct grammar and spelling is a form of learning and as such is a single facet of the reflection on a person's overall level of learning.

This, of course, applies to the majority - not to individuals who suffer from some recognised condition (dyslexia, for example).

As a yardstick, the decline in knowledge of spelling and grammar could be said to be symptomatic of a decline in educational standards generally - much the same as happened with arithmetical abilities when calculators came along.

Surely you can't split declining arithmetical capabilities (which you didn't mention) from declining grammatical ones?

I'm just wondering what a writer who couldn't spell or use correct grammar would come across like if he was published verbatim ('moron' springs to mind :))

so, which dictionnary was lying next to you when you wrote that?
certainly one with the word decline in it ;):p

as for the barbie... we all know jesse plays with actionscript man (there was a thread a long while ago where vile(?) created such an action man)

also, habitual typing behavior often leads to spelling mistakes.

Sualdam
07-08-2003, 04:51 PM
That's true, but as was implied earlier we are talking about simply not knowing how to spell and how to use grammar.

Typos and errors - things you can spot when you double check - are not the same as not being able to spell in the first place.

Hey annexion ... was it you I was chatting to on here about those jukeboxes? How are you finding it? I'm loving mine ... makes the journey into work so much easier and I've still got a nice load of space for a couple more films or a load more albums.

You seen the new one they've just brought out ... very sweet!!

Yeah, I saw it, but I refuse to pine over it. :p

That one lacks some of the things our's have though, so I'm alright with it. You know, I just found out you can change the color theme on the display too. Also, make sure you update the firmware for it periodically.
