Like the subject says... SWF attachments have been enabled by popular demand. Note that attachments only at this stage, the [ swf ] tags are still disabled.

When you post a new post there is an attachment field at the bottom. You can broswe for local files and attach them. They must be under 100Kb

Sounds like a mime types problem. But, who knows, I'm not a server aficionado.

so, why still we can't have the [swf]
still security issue ??

Nope it's not a security thing any more but we'd like to avoid it for users who are slow connections, etc. I've learned how to get the Flash attachments to download properly. I'll make the changes to the files now and check it in a moment.

OK a simple change to vBulletin taught it about the MIME type of Flash. Flash attachments now work just fine. Check out my test.swf above.

Just my 2 cents, Jesse.

If you restricted it to, say, 20kb and enforced it it wouldn't affect many people, surely?

These days you almost have to assume that the average user has 56k (http://www.dreamink.com/design5.shtml), and given that people can already attach JPGs as they see fit using the IMG tags I can't see that a 20k swf footer would overburden things significantly.

I must admit, I thought security issues were the reason these were being kept out.

My biggest problem with SWF embedded tags is this:
a) I've fogotten how on earth I ever got them working in the first place. I can't get them to show up right without people specifying the width and height... at least I couldn't yesterday in the 10 minutes I tried
b) There was something else but I've forgotten it now... Damn short term memory

when I was in the age of 19-25, I used to do a little job in a place that I was able to keep in mind the info about ove 100 ppl (the name, the area they are living in,.....)

It'd be interesting to do a poll, though :)

Given the choice between being able to attach a SWF or embed one, I can guess what most people would go for (I think ;))

I can't actually see the point of attaching a SWF. You can do that by zipping them already.

If you enable SWF tags, though, you DO run the risk of people posting huge files - hence the need to limit it, and at which point it becomes useful only for footers (and challenges), but not for 'look at my MP3 site, I'm only 8 years old'-type situations :D
