possible to force open .mpg files in mediaplayer?

hi there,
not quite sure im in the right forum..
is it possible to give an actionscript or javascript command to open an mpg file on my website only in the windows mediaplayer?
how does html or flash choose the mediaplayer? is it depending on who the opening configuration for mediafiles is set on the users computer?
is it possible to give directions in flash to open an mpg file in any mediaplayer (quicktime or mediaplayer or realplayer) without opening a browser window with mediaplayer embeded?

there is no way to run a specific piece of software(on someones computer) from a web page. heck, how are you gonna even know if they even have the piece of software on their box?
