transparent image bg

is it possible to get the bg of a image transparent, like say if I were to take a picture of myself on a green wall, then I use the magic wand to take out the green part so there's nothing there and save it as a .jpg. When I go into flash the part that is suppose to be clear is white.

Use a png file. The quality is amazing and it supports transparency.

Amazing may be a bit strong but

A 24 bit png supports an 8 bit transparancy which means you get a gradient transparency (if it was in the original image of course) which is far nicer than the 1bit (i.e. transparent or not ) transparency in a gif.
