http://www.free-webhosts.com/free-php-webhosting.php is a good place to start, but also google (http://www.google.com/search?q=php+host+free) - but you already did that, right?:)

Does anyone know of a host like brinkster (a genuinely free host that gives you a folder under a brinkster domain name) that supports php?

I just want some on line space to do some practical tests before comiting to a paid host. Most of these 'free' host require you to jump through hoops and pay more (for domains mostly) than a straight cheap pay host.

I used www.spaceports.com for a while - no hassle to sign up, slow but reasonably reliable.....you have to register for a straight account and then ask for php/mysql - there are ads on the non-cgi domains but at the time I was using it, none on the cgi domain. It's a shame www.f2o.org aren't signing up at the moment, they are brilliant - exceptional in lots of ways - although it wouldn't help you right now it's worth keeping an eye on them for when they start up again....

there's a long thread about this on the www.phpforflash.com board with lots of links, but whatever you do, don't register:eek: you'll end up getting spammed cos you can't unsubscribe from threads and you get notification every time someone posts, no one on the darn site to complain to (abandoned?) etc etc:rolleyes: but that's another story!

Yeah had got as far as signing up for a cgi at spaceports by the time u posted (every thing other site on the list higher than it being not usable for one thing or the other.)

Got an index page up. Waiting for the cgi bin so i can run phpinfo and find out what the real story is.

php3 is an extension associated with php version 3. Php is now on (or nearly on ) version 5 with most places having a version of 4 whihc uses the .php extension.

Despite spaceports being what they claim to be and giving you what they claim to offer I think the cgi server is too slow for anything other than the most trivial php.

It totally dies when you try to do anything through php admin 5+mins before resolving a page for example.

Edit: a bit harsh maybe. I'm having some joy with it now.

Depite it being a total tit to get it to run phpadmin to do the initial set up on my db i finally got it to work.

I have a chat app the works by polling the DB every second and had that working with 3 users.

So I suppose my overall rating for it is pretty good for no money.
